Steve Smith: Jerry Richardson wanted Peppers, Fox didn’t

Jammer was soooooo good.  Ended up getting Gamble a couple years later though.

Marty Hurney has previously stated that David Carr was at the top of their draft board that year and if the Texans hadn't taken him, the Panthers would have (yes, over Peppers).

yeah this was also back when nfl defenses HAD to have a shutdown corner. They were becoming the highest paid players on defense. It was the trend. 

That didn't last very long mind you.

That would've been ROUGH. Could you imagine? Kid that grew up in NC, played for UNC and became an all-time great and he was right there in your lap and you passed on him for a decent CB or a bust of a QB. Fuging OUCH.

I would've likely never became a Panthers fan. I'm a big UNC fan and always had casual interest in the Panthers as the local team, but there was honestly nothing that really drew me to the franchise until they drafted Julius Peppers. I was all in after that.

According to Peppers himself, the reason he left was because he wanted to leave the state for a while. I believe him on that.

Definitely plausible. I recall the Observer had us narrowed down to Jammer and Peppers and it seemed like a serious debate at the time. Jammer was the consensus top cb in the draft. Fortunate the way it turned out (although Jammer was a fine starting cb for several years, just no Peppers)

@MattHarmon_BYB: Steve Smith just said on @gmfb @nflnetwork that back in 2002 John Fox didn’t want to draft Julius Peppers, he wanted to draft a Quentin Jammer at no. 2, but it was Jerry Richardson who stepped in and decided they would draft the North Carolina defensive end.

This makes it sound more like JR overrode Hurney / Fox to make the pick. To me, it's further evidence all the moves prior to the last offseason have to seen as Hurney/Richardson and Gettleman/Richardson. 2018 was the first nonRichardson influenced offseason (granted the end record wasn't all that great).

Right so Steve Smith, Gross, Norman, D.Will and so many others that left disgruntled was Richardson, not Gettleman right

that was a tweet from Chris mortensen yesterday. Steve smith would not be privy to draft discussions. But ok
