Hurney Sounds Like He's Ready For a Change

I know Fox's comments after the game suggested that the starter at QB will be "evaluated" for the first time in Jake's tenure.

But after the game I heard Hurney on the post-game show on the radio... After several angry callers were cut-off mid-sentence while complaining that Jake should be benched, Hurney came on...

He said something along the same lines as Fox, but it was definitely hinting at a change... At least compared to previous statements. The hosts were doucebags and wouldn't directly get to the point in their questions - obviously on egg shells b/c they work for the Panthers (it's Ethan Horton and some other guy).

Anyway, when asked about any changes, Hurney said it was hard to say anything right now b/c there were so many emotions running after a loss that was expected to be a win. He said all the positions will be evaluated during the week, but he couldn't make a decision right now b/c they need to clear their minds before making any decisions. He said the best thing to do was go home and go to sleep and address what needed to be addressed in the morning and then throughout the week.

When asked about it in a different manner, Hurney said the same thing followed by "but the turnovers are killing us." Then he reemphasized that those things needed to be looked at after they let the emotions settle from today. He also mentioned that specifically the turnovers in today's game were a problem again (pretty much saying Jake was at fault, but not wanting to call him out). He said it wasn't one person's fault, but all that would be evaluated and addressed.

He sounded depressed throughout the whole interview. I've never heard him sound like that. He ended the interview by answering a questions regarding fan's feelings, to which he said, we have every right to be angry and upset. He said what makes it so hard is that they didn't only let themselves down, but he feels like they let the fans and the whole region down. He said that's what makes this so hard for them, and IIRC, he said it starts with management, and right now "nothing has worked" so they've got to do something different.

There really was a lot said between the lines, and I have a feeling we will see some action taken this week.

I was going to point out though... Remember after we signed Jake, during that off-season he was expected to be the starter, but during camp he kind of sucked and remained behind Rodney...

Then he came in and won the game against Jax. Suddenly, the coaches reason for him remaining the backup to that point was "he's not a practice player, he's better in games." Well, I have the feeling that Moore is a "better in games" guy.

I think they feel Moore's performance his rookie year was an aberration b/c he doesn't perform well in practice. But, everytime I've seen him in a game he looks like a player.

If they were to bench Jake and go with someone else (Moore or Feeley) at this point I would be surprised. However, if they did and one of the QBs panned out to be marginally better and managed to put up decent numbers leading to victories it would make the coaches look pretty smart. I think the turnovers would be down either way, but probably not outstanding numbers.

    • It may seem like our rookies have fairly low yards. But If you combine the yards for Coker,  Legette, and J.Sanders, you get 800 which is more than Neighbors or BTJ.  Also Coker is the only UDFA on this list the fact that he's on any kind of top list as UDFA makes him arguably our best move this off season for the price we paid to get him. Slam Dunk off-season by Dan Morgan. Especially if Brooks shows us something this season. We've already seen Trevin Wallace doing some good things. Getting anything out of Smith Wade or Crumedy would be a bonus. Rarely do 5th to 7th Rounders work out. In a sort of strange way that Michigan LB we drafted in the 7th got us a serviceable backup CB in Mike Jackson. So there's that too. Imagine if Morgan has just as good as of an off-season before the 2025 season for the defensive side of the ball.
    • I love Cam, and want the org to celebrate him, but they've told him why things are how they are (he isn't retired) and he says he just isn't going to and expects them not to care... I get he's never playing again, but just sign the papers to retire and call their bluff...
    • I'm happy those 2 are finding success elsewhere. Chinn never lived up to the hype after his rookie season and Luvu just wanted to go play in Dan Quinn's defense that suits him perfectly. I can't hate on that.
