What would you do about the backup QB Situation

Top candidates: Brett Rypien (rookie), Gardner Mishnew (rookie), Kyle Allen (2nd year), Tyrod Taylor (Vet)

I'd like it to be someone on the younger side that has starter potential.  You have to take some risks and I think signing a lot of the vets would be worthless.  Outside of Tyrod, the others are just not ideal and don't give me confidence in winning a game if Cam had to sit for anything.

Fitz is cool and all, pulling huge stats, great look/nickname this year, but isn't really a winner.  The others are honestly worse than a decent chunk of this rookie class.

I see high floors in Haskins, Lock, Rypien, Grier, Mishnew (Not yet for Jones or Tyrion Sooner).  Kyle Allen showed us he could win a game (*sort of game) but more importantly clearly showed NFL poise, quickness, and arm.

Now that Cam has officially had his scope done, it's almost certain we will go after a backup QB. What do you guys feel would be the best approach for the back up QB?

  • Draft a rookie? Who?
  • Keep running with Allen. Why?
  • Sign a FA. Who?
  • Trade for someone. Who and what would you give up?

Personally, Teddy Bridgwater would be on my radar. We'd have to make some adjustments with post 6/1 cuts to create cap, but having someone who was on the inside of a divisional opponent and is familiar with Norv's offense..... that would be ideal for me. Thoughts?

Draft Daniel Jones....no matter where he goes.

there is only one choice....Steve Smith's #2 Panthers QB of all time

"No. 2 would be a guy who's probably surprising," Smith said. "When Jake got hurt, we brought in Vinny Testaverde, and Vinny taught me some things to this day that I have at home on my nightstand. He taught me how to run some routes (from) all the guys he played with, Keyshawn (Johnson), Wayne Chrebet, he played with some guys I grew up admiring. So that's why Vinny's No. 2 and Cam's No. 3"

It's V time, again....and he would be cheap, at 55 he would bring experience, a beer gut and maybe #89 with him.

Solved...

Roll with Allen.

If Cam doesn't recover then we need to lose as many games as possible to have our pick of the QBs in the next draft. If Allen is bad then we'll probably have a top 5 to 10 pick. If Allen is good enough to push us down the draft in his 1st starting season, then he deserves a chance the following season as well.

The goal is the SB. A FA QB is an 8-8 type stop gap that won't lead us anywhere and will screw up our draft. We need to be near or at the top pick if Cam is done. Is it possible a FA QB could become great and lead us to the SB? Yes. Is it possible a lower draft pick could do the same? Yes. The odds are lower in those cases and they cost us. We already have Allen, so give him his shot.

Terrible year in draft for QB--we will know where Cam's progress is in early march.  If it looks like we need a starter for a year, I go with Fitz--he would be a good fit here considering we can run the ball and have some guys who can get open quickly,.

Everything depends on the condition of Cams shoulder. If he can come back and make it thru a season and play at a high level then we really don’t need to worry about a back-up.

Hurneys moves during the FA period and the draft will tell us where Cam is at

This is the most serious point. This surgery is happening earlier in the year that the last. BUT it is the second one on the same shoulder. More than that however, the issue seems deeper. Our franchise seems to have made a very conscious decision many years ago to ride Cam and his freakish athletic ability..rather than hire the right staff to teach him elite level NFL footwork/passing, and put a stable at minimum, or good at best OL in front of him.

So a second surgery is of course worrisome, but more than that the factors that led to these shoulder injuries have seemingly not been addressed. People have been saying for years Cam has defects as a true NFL passer. Too many fan boys blow it off as  "he scores points"...or "we runs for TD's"..or "he broke x or y record".  That is all true but an aging Cam can't keep that. The man is going to have to evolve his game..and I dont believe the Panthers organization believes in him enough to assist in that effort.

This is not a shot on Cam. This is a shot on the Panthers for using Cam like a mule, neglecting to "marinate" him into a seasoned vet...and now soon to be in a position to stay or go with this QB they neglected to develop into a real passer.

Rolling the dice on a player we have  and lose may not be a good idea another bad season and Ron might be fired but if you draft a potential starter in the upcoming draft wait I talked myself into it I am good with what we have on the team And losing goodbye runAnd losing goodbye ron
