NEGATIVES

—Speed looked average on tape and only ran a 4.61-second 40-yard dash at the combine; might move to safety.

—Lacks explosive qualities. No twitch. No burst. Long speed only.

—Doesn't have short, choppy strides to get through breaks and route changes.

—Play strength was poor for his size. Doesn't jam with impact.

—Already 23 years old.

OVERALL

Poor testing at the combine may affect Rashaan Gaulden's draft stock, but he's solid if you view him through the lens of a slot cornerback who can also play safety. He has versatility and would make an immediate impact on special teams.

They did have him as a 3rd but the dude is a TERRIBLE  athlete and the dude putting uo the worst numbers in combine position for his position for a reason

Kid is a project at best. With good special team upside

To be honest, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.  I haven't disputed he has flaws, I just stated there are other factors that indicate he has some characteristics that MAY allow him to be a solid safety.  I'm not championing him or anything, just saying that he's on the team, so lets give him time to see if he can develop before running him over the coals.  We always knew he was a project, which is why I stated in an earlier post that he probably wasn't ready to see the field this year.

But I will say there were several places that had a 3rd round grade on him, just as there were some that had later round grades.  I think he's one of those guys that has some positive traits, along with the negatives that make is evaluation hard to gauge…basically, it's in the eye of the beholder.

I hope he does prove me wrong but as @ncfan said, he looked awful in preseason. I’m one of the guys who likes watching preseason for any rookies or undrafted gems or how Moton is doing at tackle. What I saw made me realize how far he needs to go and unfortunately I don’t think he’s got the athletic ability to make up for mistakes. Donte can get separated on but has speed where he can get back into a play. If Gaulden gets beat, it’s a TD. Again, I’d love to see make a huge leap this year and I'd love to see Haynes put on 20 pounds and keep his speed. I’m just being realistic.

In fairness, there are not many safeties in the league that can recover from getting beat. Then again, their job isn’t to play man coverage. It’s their job to keep everything in front of them.
