What is the dumb argument you're even trying to make?

That the 34 isn't a viable NFL defense? Because lol.

The steelers have consistently acquired the best 34 lb in a class despite picking in the teens or later.

Conversely,  it was no more than a month ago that the panthers were looking at the 8th pick in the draft and nobody dared mention the best 43 end prospect for fear of ridicule.

As it so happens, the man who destroyed the #1 offense in the league with that non viable 34 agrees with me.

"According to NFL coach Wade Phillips, 3–4 linebackers "are a little bit cheaper, and you can find more of them," while "it's harder to find defensive linemen to play a 4–3 and pay for all of them."[14]"

It's harder to find 3/4 lb period.. I don't care what wade Phillips thinks.. What about Buddy Ryan??

Plain and simple it's way harder finding big guys who are fast moving forward strong enough to leverage guys who way 60lbs more than them and also move laterally as well as back peddle in pass coverage..

There are more Cam Jordans in the football than Von Miller , Terrell Suggs, or Kalil Macks..

43 DE's have way less responsibility and don't have to be nearly as athletic as 3/4 OLB..

Its way easier find a 43 DE.. That's why more teams run the 43..

stopped reading at "my terrible opinion is superior to that plain observation from a far more reputable source."

Cool .. you miss the point I can easily name 43 defensive coaches who will exclaim the virtues of the 43.. What does that have to do with the fact its easier to find 43 personal and that's why most teams play it...

This is what I've been waiting for since Ron was hired. He promised us a hybrid defense. I'm still waiting.

Thank you.

This is not black & white...I'd vote for multi-front Base 4-3

RE: Chargers, Bears, Bills.  Seahawks and ATL to some effect as well.

Look at how LAC had it set up:

At ends: Bosa (Prototype 4-3 mold), Ingram (EDGE type) on the other (Rushing from hands-planted and dropping back).  A Rochell type rotating in.  Neither DT had to be some huge NT (Mebane, Philon).  You get one, maybe larger EDGE type blitz savvy and one coverage savvy OLB each and a stud MLB.

Also, to those asking about transitional time, NE, LAC, Bears, and Rams all just switched schemes in a year.

Albeit all 3-4 to 4-3 but it's still a full on scheme change (Look out, the two SB teams just transitioned a scheme in a season)

Its not just that we play a 4-3, but the fact we play a lot of Tampa 2 coverage, that places a lot of value on Luke.

We're a Cover-3 team that doesn't play much Tampa-2.

All the complaints that people make about the corners playing 5-10 yards off? That's because we are a Cover 3 team. A Tampa-2 team has their corners pressing the WRs almost every play because they have the flat responsibility, not deep zone. Tampa-2 teams blitz the fug out of their outside corners. Bradberry has two career sacks. Yes, Rivera ran Lovie's Tampa-2 in CHI, but he's run Cover-3 since day one here. I'm pretty sure the 3-4 he ran in San Diego was Cover 3 as well, but I can't seem to confirm that with a quick google search. Honestly, I can't think of a single team in the league that runs a ton of Tampa-2 these days, but I don't follow as closely as I used to.

Didn't say he was.. I said I can post 43 defensive coaches who would say the same thing about the 43..

what you insinuated was that Wade Phillip, who you didn't know anything about, had some bias

why don't you do it then. If these coaches are everywhere, rabidly clamoring and paying for rare talents, as you say they are, then find some commentary on the economic benefits of the 43. You've said numerous times it would be easy to find.

I would do whatever I thought would turn this thing around. Our DL is ancient by NFL standards and we're virtually devoid of pass rushers. I'd be looking at this pending FA class and draft class and trying to figure out how I could fix this D the quickest. If that means 3-4 then that's what I'd do.

This. The 3-4 discussion has happened every year here since I closely started following football in 2003. It's always been a stupid pipe dream. We've always had a ton of 4-3 specific talent on the DL. Now we don't and it's becoming more of a pass-happy league.

Ron has had success as a 3-4 DC before and he's shown he can adapt to many different defense types. I'm not counting on it, but this could actually happen.
