And a safety that isn't 50 years old.   Have to stop with the Mike Adams, Roman Harper signings.

Yeah we need secondary pieces as well.. That's another thing crazy about this.. Why make such a big change when you can fix your defense totally..

So many changes---desperation?  Excuses?  If your job was on the line, would you switch D now?

I said elsewhere this strikes me as sounding a little desperate.

We've said numerous times that we felt all our division rivals had pretty well figured out how to beat Rivera's defense.

I'm not convinced it'll happen. I just don't think Ron values the safety positions.

No thinking to it for me. I blame Rivera for it. Through both GMs, we devote no resources to the position. You can’t tell me that in 8 years, if he wanted more than Boston and Gaulden, he would have got it.

Yep, well have to hope Gaulden takes a big step next year and we find a way to keep Reid

Ron still wants to build defenses using 1980s philosophies. Unfortunately, there aren't any 1980s offenses in the modern NFL and the rules are skewed toward offense. You could plug in JAGs at safety back then, but it's a lot harder to do these days. For the record, John Fox shared those same philophies and having Fox and Rivera back to back is why it seems like it's been forever since we've had quality safety play.

lol are you serious

you literally typed out the reason you're wrong and still hit send

Wait so in your mind more team play the 43 because it's harder to find 43 players?? Smh

Its way easier to find players for the 34 so less team play it?

Lmao..

What is the dumb argument you're even trying to make?

That the 34 isn't a viable NFL defense? Because lol.

The steelers have consistently acquired the best 34 lb in a class despite picking in the teens or later.

Conversely,  it was no more than a month ago that the panthers were looking at the 8th pick in the draft and nobody dared mention the best 43 end prospect for fear of ridicule.

As it so happens, the man who destroyed the #1 offense in the league with that non viable 34 agrees with me.

"According to NFL coach Wade Phillips, 3–4 linebackers "are a little bit cheaper, and you can find more of them," while "it's harder to find defensive linemen to play a 4–3 and pay for all of them."[14]"

I thought this might be a possibility when they drafted Haynes last year and did not entertain bringing TD or Peppers back.

It seems everyone is focused on next year and getting this done within a year.  I wonder if their timeframe is not a little longer than that.  If Cam is getting shut down next year, it is a perfect time to make the transition as we are not likely to compete for the SB anyway.

So the question is, what are colleges sending out?  What are the trends?  If staffing a 3-4 is easier and cheaper than a 4-3 based on the available personnel over the next 2-5 years, it may make sense to get a jump on the other 15-20 teams still trying to maintain a 4-3.  Get ahead of the curve.  Use some analytics that Tepper seems to want.

It won't be perfect in 2019, but signing a free agent 3-4 OLB and drafting stud 3-4 OLB (maybe Politte) and we'd be wll on our way.
