Rodrigue says Rivera will be coach and DC next year

Sure we do. James Bradberry, Darryl Worley, Zack Sanchez. Three DBs taken in a panic draft. Exactly what checks and balances are in place?

Keep in mind, the Raiders just hired Mike Mayock to the GM position. Just about the first words out of his mouth were that Gruden had final say in the personnel decisions. Most GM/Coach relationships are like this, unless the coach is a newby.

First of all, the head coach should have major input. I wouldn't want a front office that doesn't allow that.

That being said, you're reaching for straws believing he'll reach.

Whatever. You do you and ignore how a vast majority of front offices work.

Depending on personnel, and the availability of a consistent pass rush.

True, there are still many issues that need to be addressed concerning the Panthers defense during this off season, but the person calling the plays is no longer one of them.

Ron is a definite upgrade over what we've had for DC these last few years and that's a good thing.

He's under contract through 2020. If he makes a run next year, he likely gets an extension. How is this a lame duck year? No one this forum has ever used this term correctly.

To play devil's advocate, what about a run next year after a year like this year would warrant an extension for a coach like Rivera with such consistently-inconsistent seasons? Simply the standard procedure of not wanting coaches to go into the final year of an agreement?

Why does everyone hate Rivera? Based on the defensive play after firing the assistants Rivera deserves this. Rivera is not the one who hasn't addressed our pass rush. The only knock I have on Rivera is his loyalty to certain guys. There are no solid coaching prospects out there.

1.) Unless he’s been told that he’s gone next year whether he wins it all or not (unlikely) it’s still not a “lame duck” scenario.

2.) Coaches rarely get fired after playoff runs. Possible, but not likely. I agree that it’s possible that due to inconsistency, he might not get an extension.

I tend to agree. This is a "put up or shut up" moment for Ron this year. He'll be judged on the team's performance, with more scrutiny on the defense.

That's fine.

What DOES bother me is the idea that Rivera will be so focused on the defense, that he will over-reach in the draft and in FA in order to try and fix the defense. I would be concerned with the potential for over-paying and drafting a prospect above his expected draft slot to do so.

While we all have concerns about the OLine and Center, I don't expect as much movement there, now.

Not only is Ron trying to make it work with Carolina, in the back of his mind, he has to be considering this as an audition for his NEXT job, if it comes to that.

Not ideal.

Yeah, I could see that being an issue. My hope is that Tepper worked with them to create a multi year plan. A plan that outlines how to strengthen the team over the next few years (it will take a while) so we can make a real SB run at some point. That would keep any bad short term decisions in check.

I don't hate Rivera - he's a solid coach. I just think we've seen what he can do here and it's time to go a different direction.

2019 won't be a lame duck year and I didn't say anything about firing him after a playoff run. He's under contract through 2020, so he would have one more year under his current contract to coach after a 2019 playoff run. That's the point of my question - what is the argument for extending him beyond 2020 following the 2019 season instead of seeing how things play out in 2020?
