Quarterback Possibilities for the Carolina Panthers

@Jeremy Igo Could going into the season with only Cam and Kyle be a blessing in disguise? We could focus on young defensive talent and maybe o-line in this draft. If Cam's shoulder holds up and Rivera turns it around and gets us back to the playoffs, then sure that's great and all. Most likely scenario is the shoulder just can't hold up for a grueling NFL season anymore. If that happens then surely the wheels would fall off yet again. Tepper would be forced to clean house. We'd be rid of the JR stench for good. And also the 2020 QB class is loaded. Complete rebuild, Luke and Cam prime wasted unfortunately, but at least we'd have CMC, DJ, Samuel, and Thomas paired with our new qb.

Hell no on Bridgewater. That final game was his audition and he looked worse than Allen. And Tyrod Taylor is terrible.

I would add to those saying that you shouldn't draft a quarterback in a weak quarterback class, you might want to take a look back at the quarterback class the year Newton was drafted.

Who knows, kid could be bad or could be great. In the 3rd or 4th I would not mind finding out.

This.  No one can say with certainty whether any college qb, or any draft pick for that matter will succeed in the NFL.  The teams just have to take a chance.

 

I am not saying we should or should not draft a qb, but the currently analysis of a weak qb class shouldn't stop us from picking one.

This class looks more like 2013 than 2011. Shore up the lines, sign the Brock Osweilers of the world and if you need to draft a QB, get one in 2020.

I remember an article a while back where an analyst talked about how harm strength was probably the single most useless characteristic for evaluating a quarterback.

Haskins who is considered the best in this class, the eye tape alone can tell you he isnt near the QB in most classes.

Agree on Grier completely.  Haskins was very accurate and led the nation in passing.  Good leadership qualities as well.  If he declares his combine and workouts will be interesting.  Could be something there IMO.  Tough call atp.

Watched some highlights and the ball comes out quick with him and on the money.  Looks like Rivers with more velocity.  Now, his supporting cast was really good and I see a nice clean pocket on most throws...no pressure.  He does slide and move pretty well.  Probably the best QB in this draft with Jones right there too.

I think Foles could have been a possibility a while ago but after the last few weeks his price has skyrocketed (again).

Allen looked good in what I consider a meaningless preseason game.  He is not the solution. May be he can develop but he is not someone you can plug in and expect to win right away.

I'd rather us trot out Kyle Allen, whose contract is far cheaper, than Bridgewater, who Allen just outplayed by miles. Tyrod Taylor assisted in the Browns not winning a game until they took him out. With our offensive line, which is worse than theirs, what makes anyone think he'd be worth a damn here? 

I'm fine with taking a flier on a rookie in the mid-to-later rounds. Wasting valuable space on a retread free agent won't solve the biggest problem, which is that our OL is so bad it gets every quarterback hurt. invest in the OL first in draft and FA -- then prioritize QB. All QBs look better when given adequate pass protection.

However , taking his shoulder injury into consideration, we have to be prepared for the fact that his shoulder may not last the 2019 season. It didn't this year, there is no real reason to assume it will next year. It seems to have gotten worse since his surgery two years ago, and that ain't great news.

 

So, what to do? The Carolina Panthers have always been terrified of a QB controversy with Cam Newton. I cannot forsee them spending a high draft pick or a ton of money for a backup. They just won't want that kind of news surrounding their franchise QB, injured as he may be. They don't really want competition there, just an adequate backup should the need arise.

 

Thus, I see three possibilities.

1. Roll with Kyle Allen

I must admit Allen looked really good against the Saints. Believe it or not, the Saints defense was actually playing and trying to stop him. Well, at least the players were. The overall scheme was very vanilla and didn't throw Allen many different looks. So we really have no idea how he will actually perform once a team has his film and game plans for his weaknesses. It is a pretty big gamble.

2. Bring in a Free Agent

Yes, I would love to see Kaep here but it ain't happening, so I won't discuss it. Pointless.

Tyrod Taylor? Teddy Bridgewater?  I could see either happening here for the right price. Either could do fairly well in Norv's system that made an undrafted rookie look decent.

3. Draft a mid round prospect

This is the route I would like to see the Panthers go. The Panthers are the only team in the league that hasn't drafted at QB since the 2012 season. That is just crazy.

A guy like WVU's Will Grier is projected anywhere from rounds 2-4. If he is there in 3 or 4 for the Panthers I would like to see him taken. Local kid with plenty of up side. Good value there for a mid round pick.

 

 

I feel like each year we get blindsided, in the mid rounds, with guys that have us all scrambling to look up who the hell we just drafted.

Grier is on a lot of our radars, for better or worse, and I would welcome the addition. 

I think it is more likely, though, that we end up with someone that we have never heard of.  We have not drafted a QB for many years... longer than any other team IIRC.

I'll bet we break that trend with back-to-back 19/20 selections.  I won't bet much... but if the worst case ends up being the case, we will have a long year in 2019 and a exciting draft in 2020.

If we have to really spend to get a QB, I'd rather it be Tua or Justin Herbert in 2020. Senseless to pick a QB because of the need, regardless of the talent pool. That's how the 2010 Jacksonville Jaguars (garbage water) became the 2011 Jacksonville Jaguars (garbage water starring Blaine Gabbert).
