Quarterback Possibilities for the Carolina Panthers

Jeremy Igo

Recommended Posts

First off, to all the overly emotional knee jerk Cam Newton fans, I hope Cam can play at 100% all season long. That is by far the best outcome available.

However , taking his shoulder injury into consideration, we have to be prepared for the fact that his shoulder may not last the 2019 season. It didn't this year, there is no real reason to assume it will next year. It seems to have gotten worse since his surgery two years ago, and that ain't great news.

So, what to do? The Carolina Panthers have always been terrified of a QB controversy with Cam Newton. I cannot forsee them spending a high draft pick or a ton of money for a backup. They just won't want that kind of news surrounding their franchise QB, injured as he may be. They don't really want competition there, just an adequate backup should the need arise.

Thus, I see three possibilities.

1. Roll with Kyle Allen

I must admit Allen looked really good against the Saints. Believe it or not, the Saints defense was actually playing and trying to stop him. Well, at least the players were. The overall scheme was very vanilla and didn't throw Allen many different looks. So we really have no idea how he will actually perform once a team has his film and game plans for his weaknesses. It is a pretty big gamble.

2. Bring in a Free Agent

Yes, I would love to see Kaep here but it ain't happening, so I won't discuss it. Pointless.

Tyrod Taylor? Teddy Bridgewater?  I could see either happening here for the right price. Either could do fairly well in Norv's system that made an undrafted rookie look decent.

3. Draft a mid round prospect

This is the route I would like to see the Panthers go. The Panthers are the only team in the league that hasn't drafted at QB since the 2012 season. That is just crazy.

A guy like WVU's Will Grier is projected anywhere from rounds 2-4. If he is there in 3 or 4 for the Panthers I would like to see him taken. Local kid with plenty of up side. Good value there for a mid round pick.

They have to do something

Kyle Allen had a nice game, far better than Heinke, and yet Rivera took him out in favor of Heinke with a damaged arm

I am uncertain about Allen. I saw things to like...he knows how to move in the pocket (on those rare occasions that there is one ) and he knows when to get out. However his body of work was limited in college and in the pros.  Could he do that under pressure?   Could he do that under the expectation to perform?  Could he do that when defenses scheme to his tendencies based on a body of work?   Don’t know.

I will admit that the thought of Hurney draft another QB makes me want to throw up but at least he has Turner and that should help

i pray for Newton’s return to health but either he can perform or he can’t, and if he can’t. Panthers need to move on and hopefully understand they need a LT to keep whoever is back there up right.

I just think folks are taking this shoulder thing too seriously. The guy barely had time to heal. I say give him the Andrew Luck treatment and let the guy heal. Then get all panicky.

With that being said, Cam is in his 8th season, correct? It's about time we drafted a player we can mold behind Cam. These UDFA pick ups aren't working. I'd really like to try and get RGIII here or Tyrod Taylor if we're going the veteran back up route.

That pretty much means we need a QB for next season and possibly the following if we are resting him like Luck.

1.  Of course you bring in Allen to compete

But your not drafting one rounds 1-3. This is one of the worst QB classes to come out in a. Loooong looong time.  And next years in 2020 is one of the strongest.  We have crater size holes at starting positions on Both sides of the trenches.  And this draft class is one of the strongest DL class's.  Grabbing a Grier rounds 1-2 just spells the dejavu of the Jimmy Clausen disaster.  Where we had to turn around and draft a QB high in the 1st the next year.

At the same time, there will be a good group of potential vet QBs that will be hitting the FA or cut.  Tyrod Taylor, Bridgewater are htting FA while Tannehill and Flacco will be getting cut.

The obvious choice is we get us another Derek Anderson vet type for next year and see what Cam does.   Because if Cam doesnt come back to normal, we Will be draftng a QB high in the Top 15 or so even if we have to trade up reguardless if draft a QB this year or not

Things like this are often said. This is the worst class, this is the best class, yada yada. Then every year players disprove it.

I am high on Allen, he looks like a natural on the field and has the instincts for it.   Sidestepping pass rush and throwing the deep ball it is a thing of beauty, let's just say he passes the 'eye test' given that we have not seen a lot of him to get proper stats.   If Cam is not ready to start I am totally ok with Allen playing until Cam is ready.

My least favourite option is drafting because it would surely be a waste of a pick we need elsewhere.

True

But Grier has a pretty weak arm and about the same size as pickles.  Also not as mobile as a Trubisky.

Haskins who is considered the best in this class, the eye tape alone can tell you he isnt near the QB in most classes.

I think we are crazy if we don't at least give Allen the chance to compete, honestly compete, next camp / preseason.  He more than earned that opportunity imo.

Obviously Cam's shoulder is a huge question mark right now.  As the season wore on and teams realized he couldn't get the ball deep our offense regressed.  If Cam's shoulder fully heals, 100% no holds barred, our offense next year is going to be *special*.

I do think we need to bring in a proven veteran as well.  I don't know who.  And before some daftie shows up to suggest Kap . . . seriously, I don't think we're interested in a guy, 31 years old, who hasn't thrown a pass since 2016.  All politics aside.

I mean, thats true, but you also just described Drew Brees criticisms when drafted.

Who knows, kid could be bad or could be great. In the 3rd or 4th I would not mind finding out.

Drew Brees was mobile though

Even moreso than Tribisky.  If you watched his college film he could take off.  The only similarity in criticism is size and arm, besides thatit stops there.  There are more criticisms on Grier on top.

Also a handleful of QBs are returning to school who were ranked around him higher or lower.  So Grier isnt going to fall past the 2nd

There are teams who are even more QB hungry than us who wil draft QBs probably in the 1st such as the Jags,Giants, and Dolphins.  Then a few other ahead of us in the 2nd such as the Redskins and Broncos who possibly will draft a QB.

So the probability of him falling to the 3rd is slim.
