He has had a combined 25 the past two seasons in which the Panthers have had to rest his shoulder during the week so he could play on game day.

From the first link. 25 completions over 25 yards the last two seasons. 32 in rookie season, 25 in 2015... ext.

Then we can go here

9.6% of throws went over 20 yards in 2017, lowest of his career. 15 completions over 20 yards. Compare that to 2016 when Cam was the 4th most accurate qb on throws over 5 yards. Compare that to his other seasons when he was near the top in the NFL in completions over 20 yards.

All the evidence is there.

You're being deliberately disingenuous by completely glossing over the fact that was the same year Ted Ginn went to NO, and Cam Newton was also our leading rusher for the season.

Do you not think there's a correlation between our lack of deep passing game in 2017 and the fact that Cam Newton had to literally drag our offense on his back to the playoffs? Does that also not take a physical toll?

Again. 2018 we know he was hurt.

This isn't even true, either. He had general soreness. Not hurt. The 5 close games we lost after Pittsburgh Cam's shoulder had nothing to do with.

You are the only person with what I can only assume are two working eyes who thinks this.

Again, you know more about Cam's shoulder than the rest of us, Cam and the docs.  Will you please, in detail, enlighten us?

I'm speaking on the second half of the season after he took a helmet to his throwing shoulder against the Ravens. That's gonna result in more than general soreness man.

Before that he seemed to have no trouble rallying the offense to victory on the road against the Eagles down 17 points in the 4th.

Are you talking about the Steelers game, when Watt wrecked himself into Cam's shoulder?

Cam came back the following week versus the Lions and put up MVP numbers.

I could be wrong on the specific game, but I remember watching it wondering how anyone else could keep playing after that. He's a tough motherfuger no doubt.

Regardless, the last 2 games he played in made it pretty clear he was dealing with something more than soreness. He shouldn't have been playing. I don't know the status of his shoulder here just like anyone else. But again, I'm not going to declare him halfway out the door like some are here. It's just two faced bullshit.

You and I have disagreed on this point, but the point remains.  Cam hasn't had the deep ball consistently in a couple of years.  He can hit one or two, here and there, but nothing like he was.  That could be the O line (although that should have been an issue since day 1 and it wasn't), it could have been Ginn departing, (I do think this plays into it a bit, but not as much as others), and it could have been Cam never fully returning to strength after the first injury and surgery.

The latter has the most traction, especially since Norv took over, a coach known for pushing the ball downfield often.

Cam needs to shut it down, and do whatever it takes to get back to somewhat full strength.  I'm 100% on board with him sitting next season, if that's what the docs think is best.

No I'm not, yes Ginn wasn't here. Point taken but still doesn't cover up the fact that since the shoulder surgery the Panthers have thrown the ball deep less then pretty much every other team. Even last year if you watched the way he threw deep compared to before the surgery you could see the difference.

His arm strength for deep throws just isn't there, he could still zip it on shorter throws but he doesn't have the range needed for deep ball throws any more and the last two seasons prove that with him having a completion percentage on deep throws around .28% and one of the lowest td percentages on those throws. Add in that too my knowledge and based on information I've looked for he doesnt have a completion over 30 air yards either season. Before the shoulder surgery he was tops in the NFL in 2015, near the top in his other years prior as well.

Heres the thing, last season through 5 games Cam's shoulder was fine. It died off as the season went along. At one point he was completing 63% of his deep throws last year, then his shoulder went and he started getting rest and more rest during practice.

Comes into this season, they eliminate most of the deep throws to help manage his shoulder. it lasts longer but the team isn't throwing the ball deep. Not before the Steelers game or after it. Shoulder gets sore again and he loses zip on the ball.

That's two straight seasons where he's developed issues with his shoulder and the team nor it's doctors have any idea on how to fix it. Cam has said as much himself.

He has range issues and fatigue issues with his shoulder after the surgery. The stats show this out, the team and it's treatment of him during practice the last two seasons has shown this to be fact.

Does anyone really expect him going into season 9 at the age of 30 for his shoulder to just fix itself and motion and fatigue to no longer be an issue???

Yall keep acting like it's a downside but the craziest part about CMC is that he produced despite everyone knowing he was gonna get the ball 90% of the time.

It's also easy to take for granted how sure his hands are. Anyone who watched this team before he came along should know that short completions were never the given they are now

Scott Fowler calls McCafferey's 2018 performance the best by any runningback in Panthers history...

Quote

Let’s take a look at McCaffrey’s year and the other top three contenders, in reverse order of how significant I think the season was:

4. Jonathan Stewart, 2009. 1,133 rushing yards, 11 total TDs, 139 receiving yards. The Panthers’ all-time rushing leader, Stewart’s best year came while playing part-time with DeAngelo Williams — the other half of the “Double Trouble” combo.

3. Stephen Davis, 2003. 1,444 rushing yards, eight total TDs, 159 receiving yards. Davis was a battering ram with some speed when healthy. This was Davis’s only big season with the Panthers, but it helped propel the team to the Super Bowl.

2. DeAngelo Williams, 2008. 1,515 rushing yards, 20 total TDs, 121 receiving yards. Williams went on a scoring binge throughout this incredible season. In his eight other years with the Panthers, Williams never scored more than seven TDs in a single year.

1. Christian McCaffrey, 2018. 1,098 rushing yards, 14 total TDs (including his one TD pass), 867 receiving yards. McCaffrey is a hybrid back whose effectiveness as a receiver means that about a third of his touches come in the passing game. He broke the NFL’s single-season record for most receptions by a running back (107) in 2018.

Did Christian McCaffrey just finish the best season any Panthers RB has ever had?

somewhere toward the end of the season there was some crazy overlooked stat that Christian had caught an insane number of consecutive targets.  Guy catches anything thrown in his general vicinity.  I think the streak was broken on a screen where cam intentionally threw it in the dirt.

not at all because im more concerned with winning games than any individual's stat line. our offense was at it's best when it wasn't being run through a pass catching RB.

Every Team in the League will take your so called pass catching back that averages 5.0 per carry which is better than Gurley or Elliott. Not to forget he played this behind a below average line with a QB who was hurt so we couldn't throw deep and the Safety's would play it a little tighter.

nobody should like that comment considering statistics show that the more McCaffery gets the ball the less likely we are to win

McCaffrey got the ball more because Cam should have been on IR , CMC is a RB who  just happens can catch passes but you don't average 5.0 per carry with a Offense that couldn't throw it downfield for what ever reason and not be a Elite Back.I guess Barkley or Kamara should switch to WR since they also catch a lot of passes.

    • his height, size and arm will forever cause problems and limitations...that is what it is.  I think to a degree, the law of averages is just coming into play a bit with him.  So as he plays more and more, you just flat out get the decent days mixed in too.  Which is just going to happen.
    • Good point. He's definitely better in 10-15 yards. I think that's his biggest improvement. But he wasn't 3-10 +15, he was 3-7, with at least one drop (minor but still). And with multiple passes at 14 yards completed. This passing chart doesn't look like at By one, lol. He threw more "deep" passes than Mahomes (NOT comparing him to Mahomes in a skill way lol), or at least more beyind 10 yards.
    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
