What have Rivera and Hurney been up to?

Yes, you could have afforded Star.  Just can't overpay a kicker, don't bring in Poe, and drop Torrey Smith.

This isn't that hard...unless you are Marty Hurney.

Star got 50m with 25m guaranteed from Buffalo, can't afford to pay two DT's 130m and 60m guaranteed over 5 years with qb salaries the way they are. That's just freaking ridiculous

You said we couldn't afford him, we could, so long as the GM doesn't foolishly spend on a worse DT and a kicker.

You don't commit that much money over 5 years to two DT's plus I also started off saying he didnt want to be here.

Said kicker only got a 1m a season raise and most of the money was in year one.

The Poe contract at the time wasn't bad either with the way it was set up. He can be cut for a net positive in cap room. Oh and the whole defense didn't work with the way play calling was done. As for earlier complaints, outside CB was addressed but one didn't pass physical and the other broke a leg, also the rookie drafted played pretty damn well.

If anything you could say that safety was overlooked but it always is with Rivera.

I could easily go the other way with this argument and just say look at the contracts of Short and Kalil compared to the production said players give.

You'd be bitching (like usual) if Hurney signed Star to that lousy contract.

Any you would be quoting me, wrong as usual, either way.

Here's the deal.

We could have spent 27M over 3 years with Star.

Or.

We could spend 15M over 2 with Poe.

So 7.5M per year, or 9M per year?

But keep up now, because I'm about to throw you a loop.  What if we had just kept Butker vs Gano in that scenario?  Or we could have released Torrey Smith, and more than made up for it?

Just tossing some things out there.

If I'm the guy who previously saddled us with a starting duo of Sione Fua and Terrell McClain, I'd probably at least consider it.

Don't remember Star accepting a three year 27M contract with us.

Show me where it was stated he wanted to leave.  That was fan conjecture.

Star's cap hit for next season is 11.5 million to Poe's 9.3. That is a big difference in today's NFL. We can always cut Poe next season. We'd have to pay Star 10 million.

Fun fact: we had a better winning record when Torrey Smith was in the starting lineup.

First of all everyone here is assuming that the GM does everything and doesn't have staff in place. What you all think the GM of a team doesn't get input from his coaches and scouting staff who all have a say in the big board. Coaches have no impact on which free agents are brought in and signed.... you figure this happens in a vacuum and no factors are brought into play...

come on now, let's be realistic. Butker was never going to get the job over Gano with Rivera here. Even if Gettleman was still the GM that poo wouldn't have happened. Star was offered a contract by the Panthers, he got more from the Panthers previous gm in waiting up in Buffalo.

Additionally the Star contract is 33m over 3 years and if cut after year 3 still has 5m dead cap attached to it. Poe contract is basically 2 years 18m dollars with 3m dead. You know since most of the money was in 2018 season with a little in 2019.

Not everyone...

I've pointed out many times that it's Rivera and Hurney building the roster, not just one or the other.

And as a combo, they do a terrible job.

It's not a big difference if we weren't paying Graham Gano 4M per season...you know, more than enough to cover the difference in cost?
