Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

The belief was that Kalil was healed and would return to his rookie form. That belief was completely unfounded.

Not sure how you think that makes it less of a mistake to resign a 35 year old Thomas Davis. If anything, it points to why we shouldn't.

You've been throwing dirt on Davis for at least the last three seasons...Word!

You pay people based upon several things, one of which is their potential---this includes old and young. Part of the potential equation is looking at what was done in the past. Davis just had a very solid year, and the difference with him in the defense was palpable. As his age is advanced, of course you probably balk at overpaying him or giving him more than anything guaranteed over a year, but based upon this past season, it's reasonable to think that you may get something more out of him. Of course the Devil is in the details, but it's reasonable to keep him if the value is there (on a short contract), and I don't see anything emotional about it. If the price is too high, you let him walk, if not, then talk.

Might be a better option for the team to keep TD on the back burner and see what turns up in the draft and free agency.  If there is someone out there who can be a more valuable option at LB, then take him and ask TD to take a coaching role.  If not, sign TD.  He's 100% Panther through and through.

Take away any emotion, he is still better than most at his position and is good value. Unless we draft someone or they think Carter or Smith are ready, not keeping him for the sake of getting younger, or even worse, for emotions sake is being emotional. The position isn’t so important that it’s stunting team growth by keeping him on the field.

Look I KNOW we have to get younger but he definitely still plays at a high level and will be cheap. We have too many holes to fill everything this offseason and can play the vet one year role like the patriots, Steelers etc have every year it seems. His leadership alone could be worth it for a D that will obviously get younger. imageproxy.php?img=&key=7e7e9fcd50b54ebeimageproxy.php?img=&key=7e7e9fcd50b54ebe

Veteran minimum, nothing more.

What do people think, would he sign for that?

If he's really begging to stay, then you would think so.  Vet min for him will be about 1m.  If we gave him a vet min 1 year deal with incentives that could take it up to as much as 2m, I'd be fine with that even, but no more.  I think he'd be offered more by someone though, and I bet he'd take it.  I wouldn't be upset either way.

Again, this is where you have to refocus.

It doesn't matter how well Davis played last year. I don't think he played as well as you believe, but either way that's not the most important factor.

What should determine whether you resign him or not it's how good you believe he's going to play next year. This is the predominant criteria in every single free agent decision.

And again, we're talking about a 35 year old player playing a 16-game season after he already showed signs of slowing down in a season where he only played 12.

Not a good idea.

He didn't even really slow down. He was still playing above average in the last few games. There is zero reason at all to think that next year he won't be able to play at a level worth somewhere around $4M or less. Nothing except just guessing because of his age. And if randomly guessing like that was a good strategy Belichick would've cut Brady years ago...
