Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

But honestly, even if he were to have a decent season somewhere else, it's still better to let go of a guy a year too early than to hold onto him a year too long. This is the philosophy that the league's most successful teams always tend to follow.

Every player declines at some point, depending on their position. The dropoff can be quantified, if not predicted, and priced into a deal. If TD or Peppers or whoever wants less than what we think they can offer, we go for it.

At some point, the value of the roster spot becomes higher than the vets predicted production, and you don't sign them. You try out a rookie or FA. The value of that spot is higher on the good teams because they are better at developing or recruiting athletic "production" at a lower cost than other teams.

The implication is that they have better coaching and front offices. Which also implies better ownership over time.

Assuming the value of an open Patriots roster spot is higher than the Panthers, the Patriots might (correctly) cut TD without a second thought, whereas the correct action for the Panthers might be to keep him around longer, since we are worried about doing something useful with the open spot.

So, for the Panthers, keep TD for cheap? I guess?

Finally, to your point. Having both a GM and a coach who appear to be reticent about pulling the trigger on new players over old, to the point of frequently overpaying, is a big concern on this board, and I think it is richly justified.

How and if Tepper deals with this should be quite entertaining and will likely consume a lot of the available Internet bandwidth. Given that RR seems like at least an above-average coach, and it's the GM who ultimately tells vets to hit the road, I would guess Tepper starts in on the front office. Either by cleaning house or by laying down some new ground rules. But that's a topic for about 30 other threads...

So if TD, as some people want to point out, is still a "Top 20 LB" (according to some sites), what is his reasoning for wanting to make less money and play less football in 2019?

Maybe he's thinking about how he's doing physically after only playing 12 games this year?

He wants to make as much as he can remaining a Panther. He knows by saying that his price tag to the Panthers went way down. Taking a hometown discount is just that, a discount to play where you want to play versus making the most he can. I would think folks would applaud his loyalty to the team in response to their past loyalty to him. Playing for the Panthers is more important than the money or even starting. Playing cheap and willing to.play when needed even as a backup.. What a great guy and a no brainier deal.

This is true but we have to move on, use that $ on another position.

...can't move on...when the dam is springing sht tons of holes all over the place....its a no brainer...even for that hack fk, wife harassing, booze nose hurney.  Look how long ray lewis played....i think TD is of the same ilk...it would be another hole to fill and we're kinda out of filler...including the ***** draft..

Shaq Thompson is dog poo and won’t be back. TD is begging to be a backup. Half of our defense is gonna be collecting social security in the offseason, and most of the other half should be collecting unemployment. Good thing we have a proven leader and genius like Rivera. It’s over, boys. The window is closed and isn’t being reopened.
