Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

I mean I would like Shaq back, even if he hasn't played nearly as well as Davis in my opinion, but I don't think it's going to happen. Shaq I don't think will re-sign at a reasonable contract, below four million. There's too many linebacker needy teams with money that will be willing to bet on potential, because there's no one really else that's going to be available, unless you look towards the draft.

The draft, if you want to replace, or potentially upgrade Davis's production will cost probably a first or second round pick, maybe you can find someone in the third. Though third round linebackers are pretty iffy looking at the last few drafts. It's not going to be easy this year, I don't see many linebackers available.

Davis played well this year, regardless of everyone's keen eyes that aren't willing to see it.

Again, this is where you have to refocus.

It doesn't matter how well Davis played last year. I don't think he played as well as you believe, but either way that's not the most important factor.

What should determine whether you resign him or not it's how good you believe he's going to play next year. This is the predominant criteria in every single free agent decision.

And again, we're talking about a 35 year old player playing a 16-game season after he already showed signs of slowing down in a season where he only played 12.

Not a good idea.

Personally, I think he's going to be fine next year.

He is NOT playing at a high level.  I swear some of you do not watch the games.  TD gets beat regularly, he's slow and a liability.   You don't hang onto that even on the cheap.  Let it go people.

You apparently aren't watching if you didn't see his effecriveness improve when Rivera took over. David has lost a step but he is still effective in man pass schrmes, defending the run and blitzing. What few of our linebackers excel in is zone loose coverage.

I don't. And I definitely don't believe he's going to be fine the year after.

But honestly, even if he were to have a decent season somewhere else, it's still better to let go of a guy a year too early than to hold onto him a year too long. This is the philosophy that the league's most successful teams always tend to follow.

Unfortunately for us, our head coach wants to go out of his way to make sure older players have happy endings because he didn't get one in his career. And he's paired with a GM who's shown that he's okay with that as well.

It's not a good situation.

The thing you have to realize here is that we're not trying to replace a star player. We're trying to replace a guy who used to be a star player. If you still believe he is a star player, you're looking at old memories, not current reality.

You talking about TD or Cam?

Shaq is entering the 5th year of his contract which is a team option.

Since the team can obviously choose not to execute said option (and I don't think they will at $9M plus), I would believe you could absolutely notify him and his agent of your INTENT to not execute his 5th year option and try to negotiate a new deal at that point prior to officially "releasing" him.

Now that certainly doesn't mean that he and his agent would be receptive to such a negotiation.  I know if I were in their place that I wouldn't be.  I believe many Shaq-detractors would (and maybe will) be quite surprised how much money he will be able to get on the FA market if it comes to that.

The bottom point is what I’m trying to hammer home, Shaq is playing at $9M right now. I doubt he’s agreeing to an extension. Maybe if they give him an ultimatum but I don’t consider it likely.

I’d guess he’s either playing under the $9M number or he’s not a Panther.

We really haven’t heard one thing about an extension so far (to my knowledge).

Actually I forgot... The option was excersided in March so the deal can’t be reworked because that $9M is fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster on the first league day.

So he’s either a Panther at $9M next year, a slightly lower number because we extended him to some stupid contract, or he’s not a Panther at all.

Problem with that mindset is he did play good this year but no guarantees on playing that well next year.  TD has been beaten up and it takes a toll on the body.

That why we must sign him to a very cap friendly 1 year contract.
