Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

You're not.  TD has a strangle hold on this team and until he's gone nothing will change.  Ron loves his vets and TD has him by the balls now that Hurney is back to insure JR's legacy continues.

They are all Gettleman fans and are obsessed with repeating exactly what he did without understanding what of what he did that worked and what didn't. This would be akin to forcing Jordan Gross to retire early without a replacement. Sign TD to a one-year deal, and we don't have to worry about yet another hold on defense.

Yep. I'm neither pro nor anti Gettleman. I thought it was dumb to fire him when we did, but he was far from perfect. He did a lot of good, but plenty of bad too. There's a lot of focus on going to the playoffs three years straight without much acknowledgement of the fact that 7-8-1 is very rarely going to result in a playoff berth.

This thread is also pointing up one of the biggest traps that people fall into on this board.

You never, ever sign free agents on the basis of how good they were last year. You make contract offers and sign players based on how good you believe they're going to be next year.

We're talking about projecting a guy who showed he had lost a step even though he only played 12 games into a 16 game season next year at age 35...

That's just not wise.

I'm sorry, what? A linebacker that's 35, that's tenuously asking to come back, has a stranglehold on the team?

I still think that TD is the better LB (and Luke is obviously better with TD than with Shaq) but if the price was the same I'd rather have Shaq due to the age. But under no circumstances is Shaq worth $9M+. That just can't happen.

Oh, so like Matt Kalil. The same argument was often repeated ad-nauseum then. We just need to see the potential! Instead of going after a known quantity, like Andrew Whitworth, the Panthers need to invest (gamble) in potential. Boy, that didn't work out.

He’s a strong side defensive end and that is it.

We gave up the 7th most yards to tight ends this year and the 3rd most touchdowns because he is worse than TD in coverage. Shaq is the reason TD is not at SLB.

TD is still strong enough to line up across from the tight end but plays the weakside because Shaq can’t play it (which is what he was drafted for).
