Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

He is NOT playing at a high level.  I swear some of you do not watch the games.  TD gets beat regularly, he's slow and a liability.   You don't hang onto that even on the cheap.  Let it go people.

I mean Luke looked the same way for half the season

So does Luke. That's because they're LBs being asked to do things that Safeties should be doing. But the Panthers are playing LBs at Safety too.

It’s not emotional when he is playing at a high level and will come cheap in a lesser role.

I disagree. He's lost a step, and this despite the fact that he didn't even play a full season last year due to the four game suspension.

There were several plays this year where I watched him get beaten and thought to myself "That doesn't happen to the younger Thomas Davis." So I'd say "high level" is a bit much. "Decent level" maybe.

But regardless of what you think about his play last season, what's emotional is thinking that he's still going "playing at a high level" in a 16 game season at age 35, playing a position where speed is important.

Davis is owed a lot of gratitude for everything that he's meant to this team.

But that doesn't mean he's owed a spot on next year's roster.

Seriously. Thomas Davis does get beat, just like every linebacker. He's still the Panthers best coverage linebacker, with 6 passes defended this year, tied with Luke, but Davis missed a few games from the suspension.

This is easy

Shaq isn't worth that 9mil, if you can't get a team friendly deal you let him walk, sign TD for $3 mil and use the savings elsewhere and address the LB position in the draft

If you're going to spend money on a veteran, spend it on a free agent.

No way I'd devote 3 million in cap to a guy just so he can "leave on his own terms". That's Ron Rivera thinking.

...and to add to my previous post.  I'm starting to dislike TD for his manipulation of JR and the weaselly way he went about getting his extension.  I'm almost positive he is the very reason Hurney is back.  Olsen had a hand in that also by the way.  So no, TD can go off into the sunset while I still have a thread of respect for the man.

How is it emotional to sign a LB still playing at an above average level for near the vet min.? Keeping TD is an absolute no brainer. The issue we will need to solve though is Ron playing him 90% of the snaps. Have Luke and Shaq be every down players and TD as depth and leadership and sub packages.

You're trusting that the master of "thank you" contracts will sign him for vet minimum and the guy who thought Torrey Smith was a better option than DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel will refrain from starting him?

I'd call that a gamble.

Some people have gotten so obsessed with a "youth movement" that they're ready to see dumb decisions all for the sake of getting younger. Remember when we got young at CB over the course of one off-season? How'd that work out? If you completely overhaul the roster over the course of one off-season, we're going to to be talking draft by Halloween next season.

They are all Gettleman fans and are obsessed with repeating exactly what he did without understanding what of what he did that worked and what didn't. This would be akin to forcing Jordan Gross to retire early without a replacement. Sign TD to a one-year deal, and we don't have to worry about yet another hold on defense.

What free agent linebacker would you recommend that can play at the level of TD (on the field and leadership) for 3 million?

This is where I'd point out that your view of the level he's playing at and mine are very different.

So yes, I think you can get somebody who's playing at the same level as Davis for relatively cheap.
