Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

You make emotional roster decisions, you make mistakes.

So would you rather pay Shaq 10M and draft a rookie or pay 2-4M to TD and draft a rookie?  90% of the time TD STILL played better than shaq.  That single switch would secure most of the salary for all the draft picks in a year where gettleman’s great “cap management” really shows itself.

How is it emotional to sign a LB still playing at an above average level for near the vet min.? Keeping TD is an absolute no brainer. The issue we will need to solve though is Ron playing him 90% of the snaps. Have Luke and Shaq be every down players and TD as depth and leadership and sub packages.

Some people have gotten so obsessed with a "youth movement" that they're ready to see dumb decisions all for the sake of getting younger. Remember when we got young at CB over the course of one off-season? How'd that work out? If you completely overhaul the roster over the course of one off-season, we're going to to be talking draft by Halloween next season.

He is NOT playing at a high level.  I swear some of you do not watch the games.  TD gets beat regularly, he's slow and a liability.   You don't hang onto that even on the cheap.  Let it go people.

He’s not as good as he used to be but he’s still better than anyone else that has tried to replace him, that includes Shaq Thompson

I completely disagree with this. Sure he isn’t as fast as he once was and I can give you many examples of Luke getting beat multiple times this season....that’s what happens when you have breakdowns on D and bad play calls. He had many plays this season that were at a very high level, he was graded high throughout the year, is one of the best leaders we have, and will come cheap. I do not believe we can sign any free agents anywhere close to his level of pay for the money he will take to re sign with us. Are you willing to pick a linebacker with a Hugh draft pick this year with as many holes as we have on the lines? I sure don’t want that, and no 5th round rookie linebacker will outplay Davis.

Contracts can be renegotiated, but that's not the biggest factor.

Davis had pretty clearly lost a step this year (arguably more than a step) and that was in a season where he only played twelve games.

You're counting on him to get through a sixteen game season at age 35, playing a position where speed is pretty important.

You want him as a backup? Why? If that's where his skill-set dictates, you could get a younger player and start training them for the future.

You want him for leadership? Put him on the coaching staff. There's no reason he has to take up a roster spot just to be "inspirational".

I know everybody wants to believe that Davis can sheet Father Time and get another year out of his body. That's not realistic. Heck, Greg Olsen is younger and even he's breaking down.

Contrary to popular belief, they're not supermen. They're very very human.

As has been said many times, better to let them go before they break down, not after. the most successful teams in the league have been following that philosophy for years, and it works.

Thank him for everything he's done, then move on.

To be fair the coaching staff should have him out there on obvious passing downs.

If you get rid of Shaq you can move TD back to SLB where he’s matched up on tight ends.

Hell, you can use Shaq’s money to go sign a quality defensive end and then trade down and draft Devin Bush is in the first.
