Thomas Davis is begging us to re sign him even at a cheaper price and reduced playing time

is Thomas older than 33?  If you answered yes, then he needs to be gone.

Simple as that.

It is time for the Panther Purge.  We need a youth movement.

and more important we need new leadership.  You literally have to kick old leaders out the door before a change really can happen.

Oooooor, we can sign TD on the cheap, retain Shaq, and go into next season with arguably the best LB corps in the league.

TD can clearly play at a high level still, as he tied Shaq for total tackles and had 5 more pass deflections despite Shaq having 2 extra games (TD played in 12 to Shaq's 14 while starting all 12 to Shaq starting 11). However, Shaq also had 3.5 sacks and a fumble to TD's 0 for both (tho TD did have 2 recoveries). Shaq also had more tackles for losses and more QB pressures than TD. They are both super solid players with TD on the back 9 of his career while Shaq is on the front. I don't understand this mentality that folks have that we can't have both, let alone that Shaq is a bust somehow.

Not calling Shaq a bust but we can find his productivity elsewhere cheaper.

If we can keep both at reasonable price, Im in

The fact that we even have to ponder Davis versus Thompson says it all.

Luxury picks like Shaq and Butler in the midst of a Super Bowl core will haunt this franchise for a long time.

idk, we recovered pretty quickly from no first round selections with Jimmy Clausen, Everette Brown, and Sherrod Martin as our 2nd round picks for 2 straight seasons. Shaq has already produced more for this team than all three of those players combined and is still showing solid. The team's most successful picks being Captain Munnerlyn and Greg Hardy during those two earlier drafts hurt a lot more imo... especially taking into consideration that Cam was the only player worth a damn from his draft class in the draft following them. 2012 we finally got multiple hits in Luke, JNo, and Nortman. Bradberry > Munnerlynn w/o question, but I can also understand somebody thinking that the Greg Hardy pick was more successful than the Shaq pick based on what the team did get out of him while he played.

Ironically enough, we followed up two bad drafts with a couple of bangers before (2012, 2013 (Star, KK, AJ) and seem to have just done so again (CMC, Curtis, Moton, Armah, Butker? in 2016 and DJ, Donte, and Ian Thomas in 2017). If Corn, Carter Jr, Smith, Gaulden, or Haynes pans out then we'll have had two killer drafts back-to-back. New Orleans already showed what can happen with a home run draft class.

Shaq is an unequivocal bust in the sense that first round picks who are now on a rookie wage scale are supposed to help franchises with wiggle room for the salary cap by maximizing your roster on the cheap and capitalizing on those affordable rookie contracts while you have them. By letting Shaq mostly rot on the bench through his rookie contract years, we effectively wasted that first rounder because now we have to pay him like a vet. The entire rationalization for the pick has been negated regardless of how talented you may feel he is.

Lmao thinking Shaq is a the team's best long option.

Cheap TD reup and we can find a new cheaper Shaq.  Nothing against him, he just hasn't shown elite level of play.

You really want to burn a first or second rounder on a linebacker with all the other positions this team needs? Because that's what it will take to find a new cheaper Shaq.

By that logic, Aaron Rodgers was a bust.

Mayo is the new, cheaper Shaq.

How so? In regards to the current overall state of the team vs. what GB was dealing with at the time?

In terms of playing position overall. What I'm saying is, a front office should generally be able to maximize the rookie contract of an outside LB significantly moreso than a QB. With a QB you have multiple variables that can affect perception of value. Like if your OL is swiss cheese and you don't have a run game or a clear cut #1 WR.

I really like Shaq to be clear. I'm just saying he was a project prospect of sorts at a position of strength roster wise at that time when we drafted him. That first round pick could have been used to solidify another position of need.
