$26M To Fill Out Half A Roster

It's really not too hard. Pay Shaq and Addison cut the rest. The post cut will pay for the draft picks. All those UFA's are free to go besides Mayo and Jacobs, try and keep reid. Cut Gano and keep catanzaro, he proved himself worthy. Williams should be resigned. However, Shaq wasn't even top 3 in tackles. Our secondary was behind Luke, not Shaq. I still think there's too much of a fall off so we can probably get him to restructure and if he goes out and proves himself, then he get paid by us or someone else.

This is an obese team that needs to straight up burn the fat and not trim it. This is a lot of fat (Poe). Get them all out and go young. We still need a pro bowl caliber corner, someone like Tillman to show these young players how to cover. If we lose Davis and Shaq that's too much at LB and Luke will be singled out all the time.

- I doubt Shaq agrees to an extension. He hasn’t earned the extension that a player like Trai Turner did so he may not get the offer he is looking for. I find it hard to believe Shaq is worth $10M a year which may be what he is looking for as I doubt he wants a contract less than his rookie contract. He may just bet on himself. Addison I can see agreeing to an extension, term is probably going to be the issue with him. At 31 he may be looking for a four year deal to finish out his career, do you take the gamble on that type of deal?

- You said to let all the other UFA’s go besides Mayo, Jacobs, and Reid. Those three combined for less than $3M on the cap, that ain’t happening this time. Carolina is going to have to fill a lot of those depth positions with draft picks. This draft is vitally important to the future of the franchise.

- Gano will cost money to cut unless he’s a post June 1st cut. Money saved from post June cuts can’t be used in free agency and as a post June cut he only saves around $1M (i.e. it’s not worth it).

- Thompson is on a rookie deal, rookie deals can’t be reworked and he’s certainly not going to restructure an extension he just signed.

- Williams could easily take up $8M of our cap space. Now you are already down to 18M in cap space.

It’s not that easy.

Unfortunately, Hurney's history suggests contract rewrites lowering the cap hit temporarily, and for a GM who might not necessarily be too secure going forward I don't see much incentive for him to change his MO and actually focus on the future consequences.

I hope he'll cut several big money small performance guys and us be done with it.  All we can do is hope.

There’s really not that many contrasts he can rework though.

Poe might be one but then you are gambling him on actually being good in two years.

Olsen and Gano are others but they are aging vets that will get worse before they get better.

Cutting Mario would be dumb. He's worth his cap hit and not part of the problem.

I agree, he’s been great. He may want an extension though.

One could argue that giving Addison an extension would be smart to push back the money further.

Do you give an extension to a soon to be 32 year old defensive end who may be looking for a final four or five year deal to take him to retirement?

No, I wouldn't extend him right now.

Minus Kalil, TD, & Olsen (Who are all in their twilights/retiring anyways), the list of guys up for FA is actually good.  Most of them should be gone anyways.  Issue being we have the same guy who picked up most of these dinguses in the first place.

Shaq & Reid were assets, but dare I say somewhat expendable/replaceable for lower than what their asking cost will be.  The cuts of contracted guys could be the tricky water to maeuver.

UFA’s: Artis-Payne (Cut), Whittaker (Cut), Barner (Choose btw -->), (or <--Cadet), Funchess (Draft or FA replacement), Williams (Sign for a team friendly deal or let go), ClarkClark (Cut), Newhouse (Resign for depth), Kalil (retiring) (Draft replacement), Silatolu (Lifetime ban from the Panthers Rolodex), Peppers (team friendly one year deal as a situational pass rusher), Horton (Let go), Love (resign for depth), Davis (Move on/Draft), Mayo (Draft), Jacobs (League min), Reid (Resign), Adams (Draft), Jones (Gaulden), and Catanzaro (No)

RFA’s: Heinicke (The QB version of Byrd... Fragile; Draft), Byrd (The project is over, also; see Heinicke), Manhertz (Two words: No Hands; Draft), and Norris (League min.)

ERFA’s: Hood (UDFA), Obada (Team friendly deal), Cox Jr. (Same; both have improved), and Parms (Cut)

Now you have $26M in cap space and 8 draft picks to fill around 20 roster spots.

You can open up more space by cutting Thompson ($9.2M) (Resign and restructure to free cap), Addison ($7.3M) (no change), Smith ($5M) (Cut), Searcy ($2.9M), (Cut, his brain has had enough) Poe ($2.7M) (Cut/FA signing), Cockrell ($2.4M) (unsure), Munnerlyn ($2M) (keep unless we can draft, Corn is not the answer), Doss ($805K) (keep), and (Seymour ($720K) (keep).

Gaulden at SS Cockrell at Nickel draft a FS (maybe 3rd round) and DE (1st or 2nd). Sign a RG and Back up center. Draft a tackle with the 1st or 2nd. You have Moton, FA, Larsen, Turner, Draft Pick on the offensive line. You have Addison, Short, Poe, draft pick on the defensive line. Secondary is Jackson, Bradberry, Cockrell, Gaulden at SS, and 3rd round FS draft pick. Thomas is your TE with Moore and Samuel at WR. Luke, Shaq (should be extended) and Carter. CMC, Armah at HB and FB. Picks 4-7 are used for depth and competition. Any extra money used for depth and competition.

This is very realistic and I also expect many to be upset with this outcome as well.

Not sure why you put Thompson on this list. If TD is gone he’s going to move into TD’s spot.

Addison stays too.

Get rid of Smith, Searcy, Poe and Munnerlyn.
