I disagree.

We went to the super bowl after we got rid of Smitty. 

Norman being gone hurt us for one year and we've been fine since 2016. He's about to be cut potentially for having a bloated contract with little production, something that many foresaw happening, especially if he signed with us. 

Gross took a while to replace, that was the biggest hurdle to get over but the move itself made sense in the big picture, but this fanbase is too emotionally attached to the players to see it. Gross had a very big contract and Getts did what was best for the team (just not for Gross) and cut his salary and said take it or leave it. Sure it did Gross dirty, but it freed up a ton of cap space over the next few years to actually make moves.

Also, It's a HELL of a lot harder to draft in the second half of a round than it is in the first half, which was a big difference between Hurney and Gettleman. Gettleman's average pick was in the mid to late 20's, Hurney's was in the 10's. Better players are found earlier in rounds, and even then hurney sucked ass in the second. 

Yes, Butler has been a bust, but he was the 31st pick in the draft and not a top half prospect like we get with Good ol' Hurn-dawg at the helm. Either way, that draft doesn't look good, but considering we had the second to last pick in every single round, it makes sense. All in all a bad draft overall and I'll stop trying to defend it anymore. 

He sucked with the OL? Please. Williams, Moton, Norwell, Larsen, Turner. All Gettleman guys. Not his fault they weren't all available at the same time. It takes time to build a good line, and he did it without strapping the team financially until the last guy. Unfortunately we had to let the best one walk because of friggin Matt Kalil.

And on that subject, Kalil is by far his worst FA signing but that has JR's hands written all over it. Even if it was all on G-man, that's his one F-up and people treat it like it's even in the same stratosphere as the situation Hurney left our team in when he was canned the first time. 

It's not. 

There are fans on here that weren't fans before Cam was here, and Hurney left us in a DIRE cap and talent situation when he left. Oh no, we are ONLY 26 million UNDER the cap this coming season. That's almost as bad as being 12 MILLION OVER THE CAP... Oh wait, no it's not, that's way better. Nearly 40 Million better in fact. And it's not like we are hamstrung by large horrible bloated contracts tied to 2 RBs (Stewart and Williams), an oft-injured MLB (Beason), a JAG OLB (Anderson), and a subpar Safety (Godfrey). So back in '13, we had all those bad contracts and we were OVER the cap by 12 million, and this time around we have bad contracts with Matt Kalil and... Who else? and we're still in the green? It could be a lot worse. 

TL:DR

Like Igo said, Fans need to get over their emotional attachments to players and quick. It's what lead to our issues back in 2012 and all the "Harsh", "Cutthroat", and "cold" moves Gettleman made to prune the roster were so we didn't end up in a situation like we found ourselves in this year. Get rid of a guy one year too early rather than one year too late.

There isn't anything wrong getting rid of players a year early, but you better make sure the player you're replacing them with are equal or greater. Getting rid of good players for inferior ones can lead to seasons like 2014 and 2016.

And holding on to bad ones on bad contracts can lead to seasons like 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2018.

I'm not saying it was perfect but it was better than the alternative. 

Also we still made the playoffs in 2014, after Rivera pulled his head out of his ass and STARTED THE YOUNG GUYS.

Also also 2016 we were destroyed by injuries man. I blame that above all else. Hard to win AND keep your QB healthy for a full season when you are playing the backup LT, 3rd string C, 4th string RG, and 4th string RT all at the same time.

Aside from Delhomme, none of the players we gave contracts to were bad. Williams, Stewart, Davis, Beason, Johnson, etc. were more than serviceable, they were just overpaid.

We would have been worse of in 2018 without Davis, Kalil, and Peppers. Hanging on to them didn't hurt us.

Our secondary was to blame for our 2016. We couldn't stop anybody that year.

You raise good points, but I will argue that Williams has always been overrated by the fanbase from 2 good years. He got fat and complacent after he signed his big payday and then bitched about being disrespected after we cut him for not producing, only to see him drop 15 lbs and actually try again with the Steelers. 

Would we have really been that much worse off than a 7 game losing streak at the end of the season that showed us trotting those old guys out each and every week when we have young guys on the roster who need actual game experience to improve? Had we made the switch, sure we still probably would have lost the games, but the young guys could have gotten some good XP and playtime a-la 2014 which lead directly to our amazing 2015 season. That's more of a Rivera gripe, but still, being that reliant on super old vets about to retire is bad for any team.

My demands (in no specific order):

1. A DE who can put the QB on his arse about 12-14 times per year.

2. A Nose Tackle who can play the nose well and tackle

3. A Center (Smart and tough)

4. A Left Tackle (Clark and Kalil are embarrassing)

5.  A Free Safety (I'd even pay for one)

6. A strong Safety (Adams sucked balls this year)

7.  A nickel (Captain was streaky at best--too old)

8. An OLB (Don't  re-sign Thompson)

9. A backup RB (Someone who does not cut the play book in half)

10. A 3-tech DT (If KK does not want to play, we need someone who does)

11. Another DE  (Great draft for DE--we can grab one early and one in the third)

12. A WR (to go with Moore, Samuel, Wright)

Good point, hindsight is 20/20 though. Hopefully we find good replacements this offseason.
