I pretty clearly laid out why he deserved to be fired, and how his tenure after 2006 basically ruined our team. He was chasing an aging roster and had no backup plan at QB despite Jake literally getting hurt in 2007... I think our backup was Josh McCown in 2008, and we didn't draft anyone. We could have drafted Joe Flacco instead of Jonathan Stewart, for reference.

What I will not accept is people not recognizing how much good for this team he did from 2002-2005. It was a fugging miracle to recover from 1-15 like we did, and Hurney was a lot of the reason for that due to solid drafts and good free agent pickups.

I would give Seifert more credit than Hurney for rebounding. He drafted Smith. Peppers was luck. Had houston chosen peppers then Hurney wouldve chosen Carr. After that 02 draft he chose good but not great players in the first. I would argue his only really good draft was in 2007. I will never forgive him for the 08, 09 and 10 drafts.

On second thought I will give Hurney credit for being able to see talent in the first round. He did give us Peppers, Gross, Luke and Cam. Two of those should be HOFs.

He did excede Gettleman in that.  But since we can't morph the two of them into one fearsome gm monstrosity, it'd be nice to move on and try to find a guy that is competent in all aspects of being a GM.

Those guys were also pretty high draft picks

Pep #2

Cam #1

Gross #8

Luke #9

The only other top 10 pick we had outside of Hurney was CMC

Sure, but what's the actual frequency of top-ten picks turning into Hall of Famers? I'd argue it's more likely to find a bust than get a Hall of Famers.

He drafted Smith but barely used him. It wasn't until we basically were forced to that we gave him playing time.

As for the first rounders, they weren't good but not great. They were uniformly great. Franchise fixtures that held down a position for a decade - Julius Peppers, Jordan Gross, Chris Gamble, Thomas Davis, DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart. The only legit bust he had was Otah, and that was because of injuries

I dont think anyone will argue that he did not have great success in rd 1 (which sucked when he'd trade future 1sts away).  But nailing rd 1 wasny enough to sustain success as a team.  Gettleman managed to be pretty successfull despite his poor 1st round history.

Now imagine if we got a guy that could nail 1st rounders, hit in other rounds, find good deals in FA and competently write contracts.  Asking a lot, but we wont find him by sticking with Hurney.

That was the only big thing he did.

That was the only thing from saving us from being a dumpster fire like the Browns.

Outside the 1st round he was terrible.

He was Terrible in FA and handing FA.  2 of the top 5 highest paid RBs in the NFL on 1 Roster.  A avg at best Charles Godfrey getting top 5 Safety money.

His picks outside the first

2nd Rounders

Deshaun Foster, Bruce Nelson, Kerry Colbert, Eric Shelton. Richard Marshall, Dwayne Jarrett, Kalil, Sherrod Martin, Clausen, (2011 pick traded away for Armanti Edwards), Amini

3rd Rounders

Will Witherspoon, Mike Seidman, Ricky Manning, Travelle Wharton, Evan Mathis, Atiyya Ellison, James Anderson, Rashad Butler, Charles Johnson, Dan Connor, Charles Godfrey, Corey Irvin, Armanti, LaFail, Fua, Terrell McClain
