Since the majority of you were wrong on Baker Mayfield. Would it be dumb to Draft Kyler Murray?

It depends when you draft him and what his intentions are.

If he enters the draft with the intent to continue his baseball career then spend a 5th on him.

He gets to be a part of spring training and even play a full year of minor league baseball. If he realizes later he would rather play football then at that point sign him to a contract. If he decides that he would rather play baseball then he goes unsigned and enters the draft pool again the following year and at least you only wasted a 5th.

If he decides he wants to play football before the draft then you can forget about it because he will be a first round pick.

He may want to play both sports but that ain’t gonna happen. Everyone points to Bo and Deion but the fully guaranteed money that Kyler is getting from the A’s is a hell of a lot more than the latter two received from the Royals and Yankees. There’s no chance the A’s will let him do both with how much money they have invested in him. Should he play football he’ll be giving that $4.66M back to Oakland.

Let’s not forget that one of the most frugal baseball operation executives in Billy Beane is responsible for drafting Murray. There’s no chance he let’s Murray play football and risk losing that $4.66M that he just gave him should Murray get injured in the NFL and end up never playing baseball again.

There are some developmental QBs later in the draft--but here is what I would do---

Get the OL and DL right this year.  If you build the OL, you can run the ball and with our WR's "run after the catch" ability, a game manager is all you need this year.  NEXT year, should Cam not recover, the QB draft will be ridiculous.  Get one then--once all the pieces are in place--I would do this even if Cam is healthy--he will be 31 and entering a contract year in 2020.  We need options.

What does being wrong on Mayfield have to do with this decision?

I think the implication is defensive in nature--establishing the fact that we were once wrong validates his idea and voids it from legitimate and reputable criticism.  Not malicious,, but not an effective approach either.

No he’s not, he’s said numerous times he’d love to play in the NFL and also that he’d love to play both ala Bo Jackson.

I think he’d be a great pick, doesn’t have the swagger of Mayfield but is a more accurate passer and more dynamic runner. His height is one obvious red flag but his pinpoint accuracy, quick release and mobility make him an intriguing prospect. Durability is a concern for me. Hate OU will get destroyed Saturday thanks to their middle school grade D.

If he did decide to pursue football he’d have to pay back what he made with the A’s from last I heard. He actually made more than his coach Lincoln Riley this year.

He might love to pursue football but so would lebron james. Neither are foolish enough toplay a sport where they are gonna destroy their bodies for less money. I hope he does,But he isn't even thinking football right now as far as the pros.

The argument that Murray can and will make more money playing baseball is shortsighted. If he is an excellent player then of course he will, but baseball is much less of a guarantee than football.

Case Keenum parlayed one good season for the Vikings into $25M fully guaranteed from the Broncos.

Meanwhile Colin Moran who was drafted sixth overall (higher than Murray) in 2013 is only getting paid $550K because he didn’t pan out.

Baseball is the tougher sport to play at the professional level and he’s certainly taking a risk in doing so. He may wish that he had an initial $25M to fall back on instead of the $4.66M that he currently has should he not make it to the big league.

Yep...this is a really underrated portion of the Kyler Murray storyline. We all pay attention to NFL busts bc it’s a more popular sport. But by sheer numbers there are way more highly drafted MLB busts than NFL.

NFL scouts and coaches have perfected QB scouting and development. There is no doubt in my mind that if Murray was told he’d be a top 10 pick that he’d be a successful NFL QB. If the committee tells him that he needs a lot of work then maybe he doesn’t want to risk another season of unpaid CFB and goes the baseball route. But personally in our situation I wouldn’t hesitate to take him with a top 10 pick as long as the committee said he’s ready.

He is what the NFL is trending toward. Mobile, huge arm, accurate...who cares about size? OU has some of the biggest OL in the nation every year and he seems to see over them just fine.

At first I was like no way but after doing research with advance analytical focus  and running a median algorithm data . Murray has a chance to be the best player in 17 years , but has a bust rate of 35% . His spraq value is a median between Wilson and ma homes and higher then Lamar Jackson and higher then cam
