2019 cap space and possible cuts

I see free agency as a means with which we fill gaps with role players--a C, maybe a LG, a DT....I personally think Poe should take some reps at UT and we could bring in a NT.   That may sound crazy, but I am not sure Poe has the discipline to do what NTs do.

We were cap strapped last season--letting Norwell walk. I wonder if Jax would eat some of his salary and send him back to us in a trade?

I also think we will offer Reid a contract and we will get out of the Thompson deal.  No way he is worth $9m.

The Kalil contract is the best example of stealing we have since Sean Gilbert.  Had we not reworked that deal, we had an escape clause---what the hell was that about?  I do not care--cut him and eat the dead money--we need the roster spot.

He didn't play the last half of the year despite being healthy.  He is bad, but better than Clark and definitely better than Newhouse.  I think we are trying to power play him into accepting a buyout or else he's told he can be around but he will never play.

We should move him to guard.  His biggest issue is his footwork.  He technically sucks a let DEs run around him.  We can designate him as June 1st cut.  That will actually save us some money but will handicap us in 2020.  The best case scenario is to keep Kalil for 1 more season... eat the $12M and release him next year.

I’m amazed that there is consensus on this thread that Addison should be gone.  29 sacks in his last 3 seasons? Yes let’s get rid of our only productive pass rusher with barely an alternative available. Clowney won’t hit FA.

I think he had 8 this year.  I take that all day long--but he did hit the wall--maybe an injury, maybe age--who knows?

He has to stay for another season.  I think only Haynes is under contract for 2019.  I think we have to draft a DE in the first and maybe again in the third.  Gary and Ferguson would be a good draft for DEs. Of course, if we get bad news about Cam's shoulder, all bets are off.

Seems to me that FA is the most obvious failing of this team in recent years. The last 2 years-Poe, Captain, Kalil have all been bad.

In fairness you say role players but isn’t that what we already have at those positions?

There is an argument for trying to find value in FA instead of a splash signing. I’m curious who you have in mind.

I also don't understand the cutting Addison sentiment. At worst, he's a serviceable starting defensive end in a league where a good pass rusher will cost you $20 million. Who are you going to replace him with? Someone twice as expensive (unlikely to be an option anyway with franchise tags available), an unproven rookie, or another team's backup with 4.5 sacks hoping with more playing time they'll put up close to Addison's production. Even if you like option 3, between Addison's dead cap hit and the salary that player will command, you'll end up paying as much as you would have paid Addison. He's been good for double digit sacks or close to it since being promoted to starter. His salary is a bargain if anything.

Let him play out his last season while we groom one of our young guys like Obada, plus whoever we take with our 1st round pick this year to take over in 2020.

We currently projected to have around $25M of cap space with 2019 projected increase

The top 12 earners:

Cam Newton $24M or 13% of cap

Luke Kueckly $17M or 9% of cap

KK Short $17M or 9% of cap

Matt Kalil $12.5 or 6.5% of cap

Mario Addison $10M or 5% of cap

Poe $9.3M or 5% of cap

Shaq Thompson $9M or 5% of cap

Trai Turner $8.8M of 4.6% of space

Greg Olsen $7M or 4% of cap space

Torrey Smith $5M or 3% of cap space

Captain $5M or 3% of cap space

Players likely to be released:

Mario Addison 32 years old next year. $7.4M in savings.

Torrey Smith $5M in savings

Searcy $3M in savings

Captan $2M in savings

Crockell $2.4M in savings

We will have around $45-$50M in March to work with.

The way contracts are structured... no one else from top 12 earners can get cut due to dead money for exception of Shaq Thompson and Cam Newton.  If we release Thompson (doubt) and trade/release Cam (highly doubt it). We can have $75-$80M in cap space.  If Tepper wants to go in all out rebuilding mode, that certainly can be an option.

Matt Kalil, Poe, Olsen are all unreleasable in 2019 due to dead money their contracts carrying but all releasable after 2019.

Cutting

Matt Kalil after June 1st- we will save $$ and will more than likely happen.

Poe- has been a bum.  We love to bust KK ok here this year.  Shaq, TD, and Luke at tikes this year.  This falls on the NT.  Poe is getting pushed around and back 1 on 1.  This is allowing multiple OL on KK and OL getting to the LBs.  The Falcons fans warned us when we signee him and got excited, now they are the ones laughing.  Cutting Poe after the season, prior to June 1 actually saves about 3 mil.

I expect both gone.

Olsen isnt going anywhere until he retires

Torrey Smith  and Captain are good as gone. could MAYBE see them resign Smith to a smaller deal if he accepts due to depth. Moore and Samuel are our future at WR.  But with Samuel's injury past.  Having another vet as depth isn't a bad thing.   As long as Ron doesnt have his Vet boner and plays the best players

Searcy should be gone, guy was a jag before injury, then had concussion issues.

Crockrell most likely cut,but could see him as a June 1st cut or later.  Staff seemed high on him so they will want to see how he recovered from injury before tossing him.

Addison will still stay atleast this year due to DE situation.

They arent going to roll into the season with a 1st round DE, Haynes (who was verge of being cut and only active 2-3 games this year even with this terrible DE group), and 2 Jag FA.  They get a Clowney and Addison is gone, if not our DL just cant take a hit losing him.  And I do understand he didnt do much this year.  But he realistically is a #2 DE.  With Poe struggling and not another DE playing. Worth a dam,  OL can easily focus on Addison and KK.

Addison hit the wall this year and was absolute non factor in last 7 games. He provided almost no pass rush and was liability in run support.  Paying $10M to a guy who’s likely seen his best games is not what good teams do.  This Jerry Richardson mentality to reward friends is obvious around Panthers nation...

I agree with this wholeheartedly, but given the amount of upgrades that are needed I'm afraid that a handful of these guys will have to stay just because the simple fact is that there is not enough cap or available players to upgrade them all in one off-season.  This team is fubar.

Addison, Smith, Thompson & Captain are definitely gone.

I'm not sure about Searcy or Cockell since they're both still unknown.

I think all the old vets will come back for one more go. So Peppers, Kalil, Olsen & Davis.

Sign Clowney & Swearinger. Norman could be a possibility too. Maybe go after Shane Ray for LB?

What are the chances of moving Kalil to LG?

Swearingger was picked up by the Cards. Ryan already said he’s played his last home game

It's one thing if his best play was years behind him. He had 7.5 sacks and another 8 tackles for loss in his first 8 games THIS season (as in literally 2 months ago). You know who else's play dropped off over the past 7 games? Pretty much the entire team's short of McCaffrey. Do the last 7 games reflect a new reality or is it a slump/wear-and-tear after a season of having to carry most of the pass rusher burden? Honestly I can't say for sure but it seems a little premature to throw in the towel on his career when it was just weeks ago he was among the season sack leaders. His play just needs to fall somewhere in the middle and the $10 million will be a reasonable price to pay.

Just for good measure, if you start with the end of Khalil Mack's DPOY year in '15, he had a 7 game stretch with a total of 1 sack. Seems like he recovered ok from that slump

We are getting all cap space back and he will require to pay us back all of signing bonus.... $11M to be exact.  Hurney, the genius...  basically gave him 2 years extension and 60% of it was signing bonus with one check.  Olsen contract goes into effect in March.  I doubt he will give back $11M check back to Panthers.  The Panthers will cut Olsen next season... he will keep extra $4M and go to broadcasting.  This year it makes zero sense for both parties to separate.  Hurney is being Hurney... giving crazy money to aging player because he’s a friend.

You might want to read some of the stuff from the Barry Sanders retirement.

Next year is a re-building year - we will not be very competitive.  This is due to the situation with Cam.  He may play, may sit a year, or he may be done.  Even if he plays, he will probably miss camps and will be out-of-sync and on a pitch count.  Therefore, I believe we take the opportunity to clean house and eat some cap.  We need to get ready for 2020.

1. We will hire a new GM and Defensive Coordinator.

2. Matt Kalil is gone with his 14.5m dead cap.  We will eat the whole thing this year.  Shaq will not be re-signed for 9m.  Olsen, Peppers, R Kalil,, T Smith, TD, and Adams will all retire. Funchess will walk with Shaq.  Captain will be cut for incompetence.

3. If Searcy, Poe, Cockrell, and Addison are healthy, they will play out their contracts.

4. FA - we will make 1 significant FA signing - Bridgewater 30 million for 3 years, 15 guaranteed.

4. Offense: We will re-sign Williams, move Moton to LT, draft an OG early in the third, and Larsen will play C.  We will also sign a cheap vet possession receiver and draft a TE and T late.

5. Defense; We will draft a DE in the first and a LB in the second - both will start. We will re-sign Reid and draft a corner at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th - probably starting at nickel.  We will draft a DT in the late 3rd/4th and he will get heavy rotation.  We will start at least 3 rookies on defense.

We will win at least 6 games and as many as 10.  Cam will be back full strength in 2020 and the real fun begins.
