Speculation on Peppers' Return

His wife posted on Instagram yesterday saying they want one more season for Christmas.

One of her friends (I assume) posted "u want one more lol"

She responded with "I've been talked into it."

On the contrary, it seemed like the panthers media heavily hinted yesterday might be Peps last home game. Maybe the poster who has a legit source with peppers could comment

I'd be for it. The sacks weren't there this year, but he probably got more consistent pressure than any other DL on the roster this year. At his age he shouldn't be playing starter's snaps, but if we can get some more help at DE to reduce his snap count I think he can be more effective in a reduced role.

2 minutes ago, Mr. Scot said:

I can't get behind that.

Lord knows what he'd look like by week 12 or 14 of next year.

Who's playing DE then? Right now we have Addison, Horton, and young JAGs (and let's be honest, Horton is a JAG too). We obviously need tonadd some top flight talent to the unit, bit I doubt we're going to find better depth at a better salary than we could have in Peppers. We probably aren't going to be able to completely overhaul the unit in one off-season.

I feel he should retire, but I’m for him returning if we knock it out of the park addressing the DL in the draft and FA.

That means, at least 2 new starters on the line and some acquired depth as well. Only then would I be ok with him returning, and being mainly here to teach in a limited role.

Who are we possibly going to get this offseason or in draft that will be as good of a DE#4 than Peppers?

Peppers could still be productive in a limited role.  The problem is the fact our Dline was still depending on him to get starter level production.

I personally would be ok with it.  DE is still a major, major issue but that is regards to finding a starter level DE, not with what should be a situational pass rusher like Peppers.

Peppers could have gotten 10+ sacks this year on a team with a good supporting cast

I feel like the fan pendulum has swing too far in the opposite direction. Yes, Hurney crippled us for years handing out big money long-term contracts to aging, decline players. That's not what we're talking about doing here (or potentially with TD). We're talking about squeezing another year for a bargain price out of a vet still playing at a good level. If they aren't willing to play for what we're willing to pay, then fine. Wish them well.

But getting younger just for the sake of getting younger isn't necessarily smart. You can't overhaul an entire roster in one year. At DE, we have exactly one player on the roster who would be highly sought after and that's Mario. Horton is a rotational JAG. The youngsters may not even be NFL caliber. We need to add young talent at DE, but we could absolutely benefit from getting another year out of Peppers too. We are absolutely depleted at DE.

    • I only have the vaguest idea of what that's like. Years ago, both my kneecaps popped out of their grooves while I was running on a treadmill. The pain was pretty bad at the beginning but it got so bad, I thought I was 100 years old with how excruciating it was to walk anywhere. Thankfully, I only needed special knee braces to pop everything back into place.  Saints have kept finding ways to be relevant despite their chronic cap issues. I'll believe it when we start seeing their throwback jerseys again.
    • yeah it was wild, folks coping that stroud wont be top level cause he cried when a guy got a knee injury. like WTF folks. thats one of those alex smith type, oh poo this is really bad moments that the guys who have seen leg injuries even knew was anything but normal.  sucks cause dell is a great story, mid rounder who always kills it. also that little guy that just makes plays all year long.
    • Off my memory, this team has generally not been able to run a screen that works to save their life. I still remember Cam got picked off a few times trying to run one. Probably the most consistent YAC concept we've ever had was Smitty's smoke routes; those were borderline cheat codes at times. That's about all I remember for the entire season. Meanwhile, I get envious of watching teams like the Rams and Chiefs. Constant little checkdowns and then it's 10~15 yards with defenders either seemingly out of place or well blocked.
