Report: Rivera expected to keep job, continue calling defensive plays

I'm not totally sold that Rivera needs to be fired. While he hasn't made the decisions we've all wanted to see right away, he has ultimately done the vast majority of the things we have all clamored for when all is said and done. Let's review from the beginning:

1. Starting with the end of last year, dumping Shula (which recall should not have been a given in a year we came one play away from making the divisional round of the playoffs and 2 years from leading the league in scoring)

2. Made sure Amini Silatolu stayed as far from the field as possible this year even when we were absolutely devastated with injuries on the line.

3. Elevated Moore and Samuel in favor of Smith and Funchess even when they regained their health.

4. Downgraded Washington and took control of defensive playcalling.

And I enjoyed Rivera's periodic aggressiveness this year, going for it on more 4th down plays, going for 2 against Detroit.

I'd be ok with giving Rivera one more year. Give him a year as the defensive playcaller with a younger defense and (hopefully) healthier Cam. If we still underachieve, let him go then. But if history holds, we should see double digit wins next year.

Yeah, that's speculation. Hence, the term "expected".

As previously stated, I'd prefer full housecleaning but I can live with keeping Rivera as long as we pair him with a better GM who will 1) be able to help overcome his deficiencies and 2) be given the ability to decide whether or not to keep him.

I see this.  RR and MH are too connected if you ask me.  I do not see RR being in MH's ear about talent evaluation  (he begged MH to pick Silatolu after seeing Amini throw people around at North Southwest Early Jr College Tech and Canine Grooming Academy State.

This is a good list but in my opinion he did everything except #2 (and Amini was penciled in as the opening day starter before he was injured) far too late.  In the case of Shula, years too late.

If the report Rapp got was from Marty, then this is no shocker.  Hurney may not have any plans to fire his buddy---they support one another (RR supported Hiring MH again and then MH gave RR a contract extension--kaching).

Tepper may not be as forgiving, especially if we lose the last 2.

All. Too. Late.

You do this in time to actually benefit from it. We're out if the playoffs and Cam is hurt. So hurt because of his ineptitude and lack of responsibility as a coach. I'm absolutely done with this man.

Not all that surprising unfortunately.

Rivera has more often than not been the same flawed coach regardless of who the GM is. Why do people think that canning Hurney is going to magically correct those flaws that haven't changed in 8+ years?

Only way I can live with retaining Rivera is if we bring in a GM who is going to light a fire under Ron's ass. Start consistently coaching like you've got a pair, or adios.
