Concerns about Newton's future...

I mean his shoulder could always be an issue going forward.  It might not hold up to a NFL season.   Those are legit questions and ones we will have to plan for.

I have zero doubt they do clean up and it gets healthy enough to go into next season to try it out again.

Based on who Cam is, what he has meant to us, how good he can be and his contract......2019 is not the year that parting with Cam is on the table.

Maybe it's not. Lord knows we all hope so.

A lot of talk recently has been about Newton being an upper-body thrower and how that conceivably makes things more difficult. My guess is that one of the things you'll have to do in order to increase his longevity is try to coach that out of him.

Ultimately, my stance on this is the same as it already was. Give him every chance to rehab and come back, but make plans just in case he can't.

yeah he's such a talent that even if you lean toward "his shoulder is completely ruined" you STILL give him time to have surgery and/or rest it and prove it. there is negative value in moving on within the next 2 years unless he retires.

Said it just above: You absolutely give him the chance to see if he can return to form.

You also make contingency plans just in case he can't, same as you would with anybody else.

Honestly I say we take a top QB with our pick and give him ample time to become acclimated. It's going to be a long road and yeah this window is OFFICIALLY SHUT

I say we fix our OL first and foremost.

We have a weak OL and Cam has made it look less weak for a long time.  Add a legit pocket passer and he won't develop right behind our OL

It's a tricky situation from an investment perspective.  You have him for 2 more seasons at his current contract and an extension looming.  There's a lot riding on the condition of the arm of Newton.  It's not like it's his ankle or knee, it's his arm, his main weapon.  There's a lot riding on this prognosis.

luke also plays a much less important position in today's nfl. the reality is that he's more replaceable than cam. both hall of famers imo but it's way easier for opponents to work around luke.

also unloading cam's contract does no good because that salary cap space wont help when we become a 2 win team overnight lol

well, you do have to factor in Luke frankly is more than a LB.  He basically is a DC.  Half of what makes him so great is done before the whistle blows.

Imagine being a franchise QB playing at top-5, top-10 level, and coming of a potential MVP season if you stayed healthy and you still have to win over your idiotic fan base. What else does this dude have to do?  He carried Shula and Rivera to SB, won MVP, and won us games in 2017 and 2018 that we had no business winning.

Cam is going to be the starter next season and he's going to get his shot to prove he's fine.

But the team has to start making preparations for next offseason around the medical prognosis they have on his shoulder this offseson.

Its being proactive versus reactive, you do not want to be in a position where you're going into the next draft desperately trying to claw your way up to the top while forfeiting valuable resources/waiting on some reject to fall.

If the medical projection on Cam's shoulder isn't what you want, you need to start  stockpiling now.

Oh of course. I'm not trying to draw comparisons between the two in terms of personnel. Just pointing out the difference in tone with some here when discussing them. I'm a Luke guy. I didn't turn on him when he was struggling. But practically every other poster here is all but outright giddy to move on from Cam.

But you won't convince some here of that. People are already speculating potential moves with our salary cap space minus Cam. It's like they haven't seen every offseason the last several years when some team has 50+ million in cap space and ends up with a losing record after spending it all winning free agency. The Cleveland Browns could tell us a thing or two about that.

which again is how you would address any other injury. there's a push to to ascribe some sort of uniqueness to this situation that just isn't there. the only thing unique about is how disposable this organization has viewed cam since he was drafted. the reason "the carolina panthers are worried about the health of their quarterback" is such a striking headline is because to this point they haven't seemed to give a poo.

It has nothing to do with "uniqueness".

If I told a Packers fan the team was concerned about the health of Brian Bulaga going forward, they might say "oh that's a shame" or "hope he'll be okay".

If I told them Aaron Rodgers might miss a year, or two, or more, they'd be on the floor in a fetal position sucking their thumb.

The importance of the position is why it's a big deal. You might be able to replace a lot of positions on the field relatively easily, but the task of replacing a franchise quarterback is a b--ch.

Best case scenario: We don't have to do that.

Worst case: We better get it right.

cam's a legit pocket passer and has developed just fine behind an awful line. i guess it helps that he's a generational talent. hey maybe we should just focus on protecting that guy

Cam is more than a legit pocket passer.   And being that, he can survive in less than ideal scenarios often and still make great things happen.

maybe legit pocket passer was poor wording.  A strictly pocket passer only QB couldn't develop properly behind our OL.  I mean you would need a Watson type.  Watson is a legit pocket passer.  Give him a bad OL and he can still survive enough of the lapses and make stuff happen on his own.  But more than mobility, Cam is uniquely build to withstand brutal hits behind a bad OL and get back up.  Hell, that opening Denver in 2016 probably takes out an average NFL QB for weeks.
