Would you re-sign the Panther LEGEND Thomas Davis.......

I see a lot of people simply saying to get rid of TD so that we can get younger and because it would be a departure from past Panthers' protocol, but are those sound reasons?

The fact remains that Shaq has disappointed and he's set to hit us for nearly $10M against the cap next season. TD is hitting us for $4M this season. Shaq underwhelmed in his audition in TD's role during TD's suspension. You want to pay $10M for that? Not me. I'd much rather give TD another $4M next season, let Shaq walk, and put that $6M on cap change to better use.

Granted, this is assuming that's even an option. I know TD had talked earlier in the season about wanting to continue playing but I'm not sure if that will be the case considering how we finished the season and likely with a new coaching staff next season.

The problem is thinking like a fan.

Fans think Luke is immune to concussions, Cam really is Superman and TD can beat Father Time. And thus all three of them can play as long as they want and ride off into the sunset together after multiple Super Bowl victories.

Reality is a lot less kind.

Much as I'd love to see everybody get the happy ending they deserve, I know enough about the NFL to know the most of the time, that doesn't happen. And I don't want the people managing the team to make decisions that reflect a "happy ending" mindset. Our previous owner did that sometimes, and look where we wound up.

No more. I want the people in charge to do what's best for the team in the real world.

To put it simply, I don't want team management thinking like fans.

What facilitates a rebuild better, a LB with a $4M cap hit or a LB with a $10M cap hit?

Frankly I think you walk away from both. While you could keep Davis it's probably better to draft a guy who is a cover LB or sign one in FA. Shaq is just a huge bust like Butler. Neither will help the Panthers moving forward and our only legit LB is Luke.

Depends....on a TON of things.

Are we getting a new coach and GM?  A new GM only?  A new coach only?  No changes at the top?

In addition to, how much is he willing to play for...or better wording, how little?

Vet minimum, on a 1 year deal, and I would probably bring him back.

Shaq may end up being the odd man out on this one, especially if we get new management and coaching...that will signal a "re-tooling", and I can't see us tying up that much cap in a good, not great LB.

Elite players aren't JAGS. They are elite because if their physical traits that make them better than average.

If Luke, TD, Pep, Greg, Cam can play at a higher level than JAGS and not demand a big paycheck I'll take that instead of creating holes and weaknesses in the roster.

Draft well while those guys are still around.

i would. i wouldn't be happy about it, but we have too many holes to cut everyone who isn't perfect. we need to focus on pass rush this season and not worry about replacing LBs. we can use 2020's first rounder on an LB, but if we don't get at least 1 elite level pass rusher this offseason then we'll continue losing. and we're not bad enough to be in rebuilding mode where we just ditch everyone.

I'm all for letting go when the time is right. But for a team friendly deal I don't see why not, mainly because I am not sure who to replace him with and get the same level of play and god knows he need draft picks at other positions. But BPA when our pick is due, if there's a replacement sitting there, limit TDs time and pay him to mentor.
