I honestly believe both Poe and KK have been hurt by the crapfest we have at DE.

I thought that

But last night, while our Defense was good.  I tried to focus on the DTs especially with the news of KK playing hurt

Poe was trash.  He was moving backwards more than forwards.  There were a few times, he was 1 on 1 with the OL and got pushed backwards 2 yards.  I can see now why Atlanta didnt eve attempt to resign him

You're the GM.  What do you do.

Here's some guys who can be cut this offseason without a hit to our Cap.

So who would you cut?

If cut how do you plan filling that hole?

Shaq Thompson (cutting him saves 9mil, he is on the 5th year option)

Matt Kalil (saves money post June 1)

Poe (save roughly 3 or 6 post June)

Captain Munnerlyn (saves 2.5 or 4.5 post June 1)

Torrey Smith (saves 5)

Danoris Searcy (saves 3)

Cant cut anyone with a plan to replace

Cut. The. Fat.

Anyone collecting a check and underperforming, cut, whether it hurts the cap or not. Take the hit for one year to be able to move on. Cutting certain players will of course and should depend on what’s available.

Draft Cam’s replacement and draft a pass rush.

Draft a kicker.

Get the best LT in FA and pay him even if he’s ‘overpaid’ by standard.

Find a vet, clutch WR in FA.

Re-sign Reid but by all means do not overpay even a little.

Find a legit TE who can catch preferably in FA but if one’s there in the draft, get him.

Replace Ryan Kalil either giving Larsen a shot or finding in FA.

TD can stay but a replacement should be in the back of your mind.

Finding a pass rush, LT and replacement QB of the future should be biggest priorities. Obviously I see all this taking 2 years to do but is the direction the team needs to go.

I think Cam is sitting out 2019 so here's what I do:

Cut Kalil, Munnerlyn, and Olsen and eat the 25m in dead money.  Clear the books.

I let Shaq, Torrey Smith, Funchess, and Reid all walk.  There may be a comp pick or two there.  I do not bother trying to re-sign R Kalil, Peppers, or Adams.  I'll try to re-sign Williams, but if he costs more than 6-8 mil per for 3 years, then he is walking too (another possible comp pick).

Butler and Searcy do not cost much so they can stay.  If TD will play for 4m, he can stick around too.

I give a journeyman QB a 2-year contract just in case we can make a run.  I'm not drafting a QB until I know what Cam's long-term prognosis is.

I draft difference maker DE in the first (replacing Peppers).

I draft an OG in the second (replacing Van Roten).  Van Roten can be our roaming backup.  Larsen can play center.

I draft a speedy LB early in the third for Shaq/TD, then use our 3rd round comp pick for a cornerback to take Munnerlyn's spot.

Best available in 4-7, hopefully getting a S, T, TE, and DT.

We may win 6 games with that lineup - but the foundation is set for Cam's triumphant return in 2020.

I’d send Cam to I.R today.

Fire Rivera after season ( he’s only one capable of calling Defensive plays so have to keep him until seasons end)

I’d Cut Matt Kalil, Munnerlyn, Smith and Searcy.

Move Moton to LT, resign Williams to play RT

I’d offer TD a 1 year deal for 2.5 Million to return for one last year if he wants to return with the understanding he may not start.

Id offer Eric Reid and Chris Clark deals similar to what they have now but up to 2 years in length or even 3 as long as we have easy out in third year.

Let Ryan Kalil, Peppers and Adams walk or retire

Use free cap space to target biggest positions of need. For me that’s DE, interior O-line, Safety, Nickel corner(can compete with Cockrell) and DT tackle depth behind Short and Poe.

Id offer Butler up for a 4th round pick or trade bait to move up in the draft.

Go BPA in draft every round outside of MLB and RB

This is pretty close to the moves I would make, with a couple of differences.

1. Cut Shaq Thompson. He had the opportunity to step up while TD was out and contributed nothing. I'm not spending $9M on that and he won't sign for less. I agree with the offer to TD for one more year.

2. Start checking around for a reasonable QB option in the event Cam is not yet Cam next year. Bridgewater is probably the best of the worst. Evaluate the QB talent in the draft and ONLY draft if it is a value pick (i.e. 3rd round or later).

3. The draft should be BPA, but lean towards OLB and Center, if possible. Losing Kalil is going to be a bigger hit than I think most imagine.

4. I might hold on to Butler for one more year. Next year is the final year in his rookie deal. Maybe the new DC/coaching staff can energize him a bit.

I've seen Poe getting pushed around a lot, and it didn't necessarily take two guys to do it.

I think the Atlanta guys who told us before the season that we should expect to be disappointed with him were probably right.

I don't dispute the fact that Poe is inconsistent.  I've seen him blow up a double team, and then turn around and get pushed back by a single blocker.  I see him more as a solid DT rather than a dominant player.

He's definitely replaceable, but we have so many urgent needs that I don't think we can get rid of him just yet.  We need those resources it would take to replace him elsewhere.  And the savings we would get by releasing him wouldn't even bring in a player at his current level.  So, IMO, next year is probably the more realistic time to evaluate his place on this team.  And with a competent group around him, I do think he can be a decent nose for us.

  • Cut Torrey Smith, Searcy, and Munnerlyn.
  • Keep Poe - he's similar to Star, pure space eater who is not going to put up big stats.
  • Keep Shaq - we're moving on from TD so Shaq will have to step up his game next year.
  • Keep Matt Kalil - for now - until we can re-sign Daryl Williams we hang on to Matt. Dont be surprised if Matt retires along with his bro

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
