just reviewed my let everyone over 33 go mantra.

Olsen is more expensive to get rid of than keep.  So he gets to be the exception to the rule.

But Greg replacement is needed on the roster.  He needs legit reps too.  Not just when Greg is tired duty.   But Greg has averaged 8 games a year the last 2 seasons.   He is getting too old and unreliable to be our only legit TE.  Like what I saw from Thomas but needs to get real reps with a healthy Greg to aid his development.

Im not ready to give up on Shaq either and Poe isnt as bad as everyone is suggesting although he could be a lot better. Maybe he needs some goal line runs to get him motivated.

Davis thumps harder than Shaq but Shaq is a better LB at this stage.

I laid it out already here. Go read that.

Basically:

GONE:
Torrey Smith
Captain Munnerlyn
Vernon Butler (although, I have to say I think he had his best game of the season last night (not saying a lot, though)
Matt Kalil
Greg Olsen

Restructured:
Poe (decent against the run. If he won't save us a little bit, cut him too)
Shaq
Cam
Luke
Addison

Sign a few of our own FAs and several medium to bigger name ones to get better/replace losses at DE, S, WR, DT, LB, and TE.

Focus on OL, DE or DT, WR, RB, and LB in the draft, with a potential of 3 OL guys getting drafted. Sleeper picks early on include LB.

Then, unspoken really, is fix the coaching/coordination problems we have.

Ultimately, we can actually vastly improve on paper next year. But, we have to put it together right.

check Olsen's deal.  I was initially a cut but he is too expensive to cut.  We just need to make having a legit TE and developing him a priority.   Means Olsen can't hog the reps next year

I believe Olsen will retire. Manhertz and Thomas are serviceable for the time being.

I believe TD will retire. Shaq Thompson, as has every other player finishing a rookie contract in his option year, will opt for an extension and reduce the number and fill TD's shoes. I don't see Carter or Jacobs as starters, so an OLB will be a draft need.

I believe Ryan Kalil will retire. Tyler Larsen will replace him.

I believe Peppers retires, leaving Cox, Obada, Horton and Haynes to fight over the spot.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Immediate needs will be DT as both Poe and Short might be gone, with Kyle Love and Vernon Butler as next up? Ughh.....

Olsen is DONE. He'll be a post June 1st cut (saves us $3.4 Mil) or an injury settlement. He already proved that his foot didn't heal enough once, and I don't think he can prove that it ever will.

It is time to stop paying old, oft injured guys out of nostalgia.

I say that with a lot of love for Greg. But, it is time to move on.

I'll have to look again.  Dead money just looked crazy.

but I agree.  Olsen is done.  Hanging on to him just puts us behind the 8 ball on addressing a  position of need.  Bring him back and rely on him and he likely plays around 8 games for again for the 3rd season and not at a high level.

but big picture, my 33 age limit is on point.  They all should go.

I think IIRC dead money would be $3.7 Mil for two years post June 1. Chump change in today's league, especially considering what we'll eat for Matt Kalil. A settlement/retirement would be great, but I'm not 100% on how all that could impact the cap.

Cut;

Kalil, Munnerlyn, Smith, Searcy. To me Thompson isn’t worth 9 mil, get rid of him. Draft is full of talented defensive players, scouts and GM need to do their job. Move Moton to LT, ink Williams and start him at RT.

Throw a huge retirement party for Ryan, Pep and anyone else who’s best days are behind them.

I honestly believe both Poe and KK have been hurt by the crapfest we have at DE.  Our ends don't scare anyone (Pep is still our best DE, and he's just a shell of what he once was), which frees teams up to put extra pressure on our tackles.  Get a legit pass rusher, especially one that is solid against the run, and I think you'll see both DT's have a resurgence.  Get two (one draft, one FA), and our DL can be dominant.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
