Sadly, the Cam era may be coming to an end.

Not quite sure if we’re in the “career crisis” zone yet. I do believe there’s a cumulative affect to his style of play, and that has always been a potential problem.

But, let’s say we’re near “the end”. Now, put yourself back in 2011. I tell you that he’s going to play here for eight seasons, win an MVP,  led his team to an NFC championship and three NFC South division championships. Those were results nobody projected for Newton at the time. He was a polarizing choice at number one, as many area pundits wanted Marcel Dareus.

Now, let’s factor in eight seasons of uncommon wear and for a QB. Let’s examine the fact that in order for Cam to maximize his potential, he was always going to have to sacrifice his body unlike any other quarterback in the league today. He is a generational talent for that reason—a competent-armed quarterback built like a defense end with the open field speed of strong tailback, running power plays into the teeth of a defense almost weekly.

I’m not so sure his career is over. But I’ve honestly been amazed at his longevity over these 8 years. I took a goddamn car accident—and the occasional DB headhunters— to get him out of the lineup.

I’m excited for his future. He’s playing through an almost dibitating level of pain at this point.  He carries that pain throughout the week. We think these guys are super human, they’re not. They’re great athletes who hurt. I’d like to see him take the rest of the season off at this point, because I think it benefits him and the team for both the present and the future.

The quarterbacks that are playing into their 40s hardly get touched. Cam seeks contact every game. Not foolishly, but as a necessary function of his duel-role dynamic. The day you have to stop using Cam in the run game is the day he becomes just a decent, above-average quarterback. You don’t see running backs playing at 40. And you won’t see Cam at 40, either. May not seem at 35. A 10-15 year career with the amount of carries he has shouldered in the run game is impressive.

Shut him down today, get a jump on the next steps for the injury, and see what you got behind him.

If this is true then he really is done.

But how could you know this

For one I know the status of his MRI. And really all you have to do is listen to what he says too.... “they don’t know what’s wrong”....”rest is the solution”....(paraphrasing but it’s all in his quotes the last few weeks)

Cam has said he has no answers on his shoulder from the best doctors available. It doesn't get better, it doesn't get worse. What we are seeing now is what it will be, and that ain't great news.

His shoulder seems to be ok up until the mid point of the NFL season before it takes a turn for the worse. It just does not appear to be able to take the stress of a full season. Cam looked like he was throwing a shot put at times yesterday. Heartbreaking to watch. Sure, another surgery could possibly improve it, but it is just as likely (if not more likely) it could make it worse.

I feel like the Panthers had better draft a QB early this year. A team with this type of heads up that doesn't draft a contingency is doomed. I like Will Grier out of WVU. Scrappy local kid.

The article in the Athletic doesn't indicate that Cam has sought opinions on his shoulder, other than the trainer.

He needs to go see the dreaded Dr. James Andrews and get it checked out before we can really make an assessment.

Having said that, yes, the Panthers need to draft a QB to be a future replacement. Even if Cam comes back, there is no guarantee he will be back at 100% and his contract is up in 2020.

Im going to go with another take

No way, should we be drafting a QB in the 1st 2 rounds.  We pretty much will be making the decision at that point that its a full rebuild.  Another QB to back up Cam isnt going to get us to the playoffs next year.  And we have too many holes to just ignore  to draft for a backup QB.

Cam- his shoulder is bothering him, doctors say he needs rest.  It sounds much like Luck's situation where the Colts panicked.

Cam came into this with new WRs he had no timing with, with a brand new OC.  This training camp was the first time he ever threw to Moore, Smith, Wright, Ian Thomas.  And has hardly thrown to Samuel due to his injury.  QB play has a Lot to do with Timing.  And its hard when all your weapons are brand new

Its Also not a coincidence that things went off the deep end after the Pittsburgh game.  That shot by Watt did it in for this season.  Since then he has mentioned having pain, only thrown once a week, etc

He needs to be shut down ala Luck.

Let it rest fully heal, go to shoulder specialist to rehab this offseason.  And work with this newer QB coach and newer weapons.

Grab a QB in the 4th to groom.

This fan base = bye Cam we are such a great organization with a storied past, that we are not interested in trying to help you get right. We instead choose to discard you because you haven't performed up to the level of our former great FRANCHISE quarterbacks, such as the great.....uhhhh....ummmm....errr. Foh. Draft a guy and get OUR guy the best specialist. You take care of YOUR fuging guys. This fan base has never fully accepted Cam, but will gladly make money off of him, creating drama/controversy for clicks, views and listeners. It's downright pathetic and embarrassing.

    • Yeah my crazy theory is Canales, Morgan, and Tillis watched the film and read the locker room.  They saw a team giving up on a player and frustrated with his production.  Seems like a pretty easy decision from there...
    • We'll probably still lose, but I believe we'll be more competitive. I don't think signing another vet QB is wise considering we already have one. I think we should trade for a young QB sitting on the bench. I'm bias, but I would like for us to consider Rattler. Carr is doing very well with the Saints so he may be their starter for a while, so they may be more willing to trade Rattler. I'm not too impressed with the QB draft class for next year. I would rather trade back our 1st round pick for more picks and go BPA. Continue with the rebuilding process, and if Rattler or whoever doesn't cut it, then hopefully Manning will be the guy in 2026. And Tepper has to back off with any decision making.
    • I said in another thread, I can’t find a glaring liability on offense. If Dalton can drop some 25+ yard dimes, we have some dudes that can make hay. Picks be damned. I’ll take a 2 or 3 pick day for 35 points on the board. We just need something. A spark. Anything.  We won’t be good, but it has potential to be fun to watch, and the tone in the stadium… hope.
