Ron Rivera: Just Average

I don’t understand how people can say Ron is a top 7-10 coach when he’s had three winning seasons. He hasn’t really done much more than Fox. I like the guy as a person but his style is wearing thin, I think it shows on the field. Players haven’t stopped playing for him but they aren’t giving 100% either

As another one-time supporter, I'd say he's probably below average. He was gifted with a great QB and a great LB. He struggled to win regularly. Nice guy, nicer than Fox, but at best he was marginally better. Marginally.

much rather get drunk with foxy than ron.

Agreed. Your statement was "McDermott was driving the ship" on defense. He was the defensive coordinator, and was hired by...whom? He did the job he was hired to do (drive and lead the defense) for the man that hired him.

Your right he did hire McDermott but what I was saying was McDermott already was a good coordinator. Im saying Rivera thought he could put Washington in that position and train him into being a good coordinator, which he can't because he can't make people better at their jobs. He's not a good trainer, teacher, evaluator. Now he is good at time control, slow tempo time management, personal staff relationships.

Not to support RR, but you cant run an "average" when you exclude a whole year of games! That is not how averages work. You don't get to exclude the year we did well just to justify the narrative you want to paint.

And RR isnt poo without coordinators? That's like saying Cam isnt poo without an O-line, or CMC isnt poo without lead blockers. Such is a GIVEN! That is how teams work: Those at the top rely and depend on others to do their job.

I was going to say something similar, but you said it better than I would have.

I'd like to add that Rivera took over a terrible team. I guess you could say that about a log of coaches, but I think the aging hack job that he inherited was pretty bad. J-Rich seemed to tank the team on purpose during Fox's last year, to the point where Fox and no one else seemed to give a sh¡t!

Yes, but cant you see that this bashes your original post meant to crap on RR and take any credit for the 15-1 season away from him? RR  hired him...which means RR gets the credit. That how management works.

Let me put it another way. Most football fans know the name Belichick. They know him as a cheat, the but of jokes..but more importantly they know him as a COACH that wins football games.  Can anyone here name his OC and DC without looking it up?  Probably a few hardcore fans can, but for the most part across this country noone knows.

Everyone knows Steve Jobs. All know Bill Gates. Can anyone name the CFO of Apple? Can anyone name even one member of the board of directors at Microsoft? No..and why? Because those are players playing for a leader! We know the coach, and the coach gets the credit for the success of the OC/DC...as well as the blame ( that RR is getting now for Eric Washington)

I never said he shouldn't get credit for the 15-1 season. I said he was getting all the attention, basically covering up how great McDermott was and how important he was, which is showing today.

last half decade in the books....

no team has had more success than the Panthers in the NFCS.   Pending the Saints don't win the Super Bowl this year.  Adding in this year to make it the last 6, even the Saints don't jump the Panthers in that window of recent history.

Easy to get rid of Ron.  Easier to get a worse coach.  So before we get a new one.....let's make sure we can get a better one.

I think what he is saying is that McDermott was already an established coordinator that Ron really did not teach a thing to. The others up under him were not established coordinators but thrust into the position and as a manager Ron should have mentored more to make them better, but since he does not have that skill set both Wilks and Washington failed. How he did not see that Washington was not ready and step in earlier when Cam wasn' so hurt is beyond me. Pittsburgh game told the truth about Rivera. He ran away from his responsibiity to the team and fans.  The team has struggled on defense the whole yr and now with playoff chances gone he decides oh I'm going to step in. It's too little too late. Playcalling has been questionable too and yes Cam has missed wide open wrs. My question is why are we throwing the ball inside the 5 when they know his shoulder is hurt. The games when Cam wasn t hurt or complaining about his shoulder we ran the ball. I just don' understand this staff at all.

Poor judgement by the coaching staff has hurt this team all yr and they haven't learned a dang thing. Rivera yes I agree a below average to average coach ceiling no higher
