As a one time supporter of Rivera, it's sad to say that the numbers don't lie.  He's average.

Assume we finish the year at 7-9.  It might even be 6-10.  Now, remove 2015 from his resume.  We caught lightning in a bottle that year, and it had almost nothing to do with coaching.  See:  SB50 result.

With 2015 removed, his overall record is 55-56-1.  I mean, it just doesn't get any more average than that.

He's had seven years now to establish a consistent winner, and clearly given seasons like 2013, 2015 & 2017 he's had some serious talent available.  And yet . . . no back to back winning seasons.  Even if we win out this year, and against all odds have the first back to back winners in franchise history, RR is still just 57-54-1.  Average.

I just can't claim he's more than that, since most of what he's riding is the impact of our 2015 season.  And it's very clear 2015 wasn't coaching, at least on the team level.  McDermott obviously had that defense playing at historic levels, but we got to the SB on the back of MIKE SHULA running our offense.  I mean . . . 

Sigh.  Can we please try for something more than just average?  I feel like we deserve it.

As another one-time supporter, I'd say he's probably below average. He was gifted with a great QB and a great LB. He struggled to win regularly. Nice guy, nicer than Fox, but at best he was marginally better. Marginally.

Rivera understands the players (locker room)  but seems to struggle to understand the game. He should thank Cam and Luke for the wins, but he gets out coached a lot--even some of the wins were embarrassing in this area.  Game management, personnel decisions, coaching assignments--he sucks in these areas.

I sense he is losing the locker room.  That is all he has.

I understand what you’re trying to say and agree he is average or slightly above but not much more.  

This quote I can’t agree with though. To say that coaching had almost nothing to do with the success that year is disingenuous.

A franchise that has always enjoyed being under the radar and mediocre play was good enough as long as Jerry wasn't losing money.  Consecutive sellouts and butts in seats didn't apply pressure for change.  We're not a new franchise, it's time to expect more and not be satisfied just to "be here".  I think the Tepper era will move us to that next level.  And get us a coach that understands this is the new philosophy.  It ain't Ron.

Not to support RR, but you cant run an "average" when you exclude a whole year of games! That is not how averages work. You don't get to exclude the year we did well just to justify the narrative you want to paint.  

And RR isnt poo without coordinators? That's like saying Cam isnt poo without an O-line, or CMC isnt poo without lead blockers. Such is a GIVEN! That is how teams work: Those at the top rely and depend on others to do their job.

Yep, and the time will come when we hate on Tepper as well. Ohh remember the days when we loved JR because of the wholesome family environment? When we thought it was cool to eat at Bojangles and talk about how great it was our owner was self made, or how much better and classy we thought we were over other fan bases because of the "family" atmosphere?

A manager job is to train his staff and make sure they are in the perfect position that fit their skills. Rivera job as a coach is the same, but also to make his players and coordinators better at their jobs. Its a business just like others. And some head coaches are coordinators also meaning they don't need one of them. And coaches train their coordinators into better ones.

Agreed. Your statement was "McDermott was driving the ship" on defense. He was the defensive coordinator, and was hired by...whom? He did the job he was hired to do (drive and lead the defense) for the man that hired him.

      I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛

      bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
