Evaluating Cam's underthrow and 4th down pass + reinforcing the fact the team lives and dies by him

I love coming on here and seeing people itching to criticize Cam for every little thing. And now we've gone back to the old "blah blah blah cam bad mechanics footwork overthrows/underthrows receivers" type of spheal. And sure, Cam's mechanics are unconventional. Yet, it's been working for the large majority of his career.

Again, he's been largely "inaccurate" historically due to a high volume of deep throws. Hence when he finally has a good short/intermediate threat in CMC and an emphasis on non-downfield reads, his completion percentage skyrocketed. Almost like the analogy between deep shots and 3 pointers and short passes and 2 pointers was in fact accurate.

Anyhow, here we are, rehashing the same old quotes while ignoring context. Sure, Cam didn't have the best games the past two instances. But man I can assure you Rodgers and Brady both have had terrible games this season as well.

So someone posted a reference to Steve Smith's criticisms. Mainly on the underthrow to Curtis Samuel and Jairus Wright in the endzone. Again this is the same guy who said Joe Flacco is elite and a better QB than Cam Newton alongside his take that DJ Moore "has a PhD in route running" (he doesn't. him at the X has largely been a disaster this season. Mostly schemed open on his big plays and/or incredible Cam plays. Again I do love him and he's been effective when used properly but don't kid yourself that he's a good route runner yet.)

He's right that Cam's shoulder isn't to blame. But neither is Cam himself to blame.

So back on topic, here's a quick recap of those two plays thanks largely in part to panthersfilm on twitter.

Underthrow to Samuel

As Scott (panthersfilm) says, there's no room to "step in to throw." As serviceable as Van Roten is for the most part, he gets beat and pushed up in Cam's throwing lane. This has been the case with Cam's oline the large majority of his career, hence why he isn't able to step up much. As a result, he's unable to bomb it to Samuel properly. If he stepped up, he'd be running right into his lineman on the play and it would've ended up a catastrophe.

In this case, Cam tried to manage the best way he could. Samuel just needs to make a play on this.

Not on the QB.

Again, when Cam Newton continually has to make plays like the one below to make the offense competent, it's really annoying to see all these rants against him instead of questioning the other bigger factors towards our losing streak:

Again when he DOES have ROOM to step into his throws, he'll do that, and do this:

Once again, more or less most of these media talking heads have no idea what they're talking about.

Cam Newton To Wright

They shouldn't have had to be in this situation in the first place.

First off, Norv was largely bad with redzone calls for some odd reason. Even then, it should've been a TD by at most the third down. Cam threw a perfect ball to Samuel that he dropped.

Even then, blaming him for this throw was largely weird.

As I've said, I don't think this is "wide open" at all. Defender clearly in position to make a play on the ball if Cam threw it regularly. Likely an easy bat down if it's not high. Cam chooses to try and let his player make a play. Nothing worked.

Sure, could a play have been made? Yes. It'd have to be perfect and spotless to fit the ball in. But it was by no means easy.

Again, play-calling huge issue in the first place. But don't blame Cam for this throw imo, especially given he shouldn't be in that situation.

---

Also, in conclusion, here's a very telling statistic that explains everything:

The defense stinks and the offense has to bail them out. It's sad.

Sure, Cam isn't free of criticism. He had some poor reads uncharacteristic of him the past few games. Even then, he's still not close to being a top reason for our losing skid.

the only bad throw he really made was the INT, which Funch prolly ran the wrong route on

Miscommunication. Cam pre-snap the Seams but Funchess went rogue when he realized safety overplaying the area, hence him turning towards the MoF. Believe it or not it's on Cam for not recognizing that.

Even then, still not an indictment on his ability as a passer.

Since I'm not an idiot like some on here, I won't quote your whole wall of commercials. But, to answer your question that is somehow in a tweet by someone with your name

alright football minds, how was Wright open? Tell me how you'd fit in that ball without the defender easily batting it, intercepting it, etc. without trying to throw it high. Because this is not "wide open" with defender trailing

You throw slightly in front of him and not over him. I guess he ran the wrong route, too.

I like cam as my qb and think he's a good qb but when he sucks or loses us the game I will hold him accountable , I never make excuses . He cost us the win vs the redskins , lions, Seahawks ,Bucs and browns this coaching being the problem as well . He is a slightly above average qb and that's fine with me irsbhard to find a good qb . He's no drew Bree's or Aaron Rodgers but he's the best dual threat qb ever . And we need a coach to play him the right way

Ah yes now show me how to throw that slightly in front of him since he was so wide open.

Again, defender trailing and catching up. Wright wasn't gaining much ground in the first place. Put it lower and it could be batted. And "slightly in front" really doesn't exist considering the risk of hitting the defender in the first place. Angle doesn't allow for a "right in front easy TD" pass in that scenario.

And yes, that tweet has my name because it is my account. This post was also made by me.

When a teams defense sucks, they pretty much live or die by the play of their QB. Brees who had a poo defense for a stretch went 7-9 3 years in a row I believe. Overall, Cam has played his best particularly as a passer. But people remember the big moments, the moments that decide games. Whether there could have been a way to throw Wright open or totally throw to someone else, those misses really stick out. It’s happened a few times this season.
