And we'll see that his footwork is mostly not by choice.

Footwork was a criticism coming out of college. It really hasnt improved very much if at all since. We can only speculate on why it hasnt whether lack of ideal coaching or stubborness or both, again we are not insiders so we can only speculate. QBs all over the league face pressure but since the good ones have good footwork in general, they carry that over to even when pressure comes. While Cam for a good chunk with his amazing physical abilities has been able to overcome this deficiency his entire career, it might be possible it has taken a toll on his shoulder or arm strength in general and is now catching up. Footwork criticism is not some new thing 89 just made up.

I think it’s just a habit he’s built over his time playing. A similar situation, I’ve played tennis since I was 10 and I consistently keep an open stance on my forehand and it works most of the time. When I concentrate on it though, I know that I should be lining up my hip. But, sports require a lot of passive muscle control which is where bad habits like that will take over. I feel like having consistent pressure in the pocket is what causes him to revert to this open stance/back foot throw, which I understand completely.

This.  Its muscle memory at this point for Cam.  He is almost 30 years old, been throwing a football for 25 years probably.  His mechanics are his mechanics at this point - not much you can do to change it.

Steve's offbase...  Cam's footwork has always been unconventional, and yet, he has his highest completion percentage ever this season.  He's been throwing off an unbalanced base and/or off his backfoot his entire career.  What he hasn't been doing until this year, was struggling to get the ball down or across the field.

Fiz made the perfect analogy in a different thread somewhere, but he said what's been causing the overthrows and missed throws towards the end of the games is the equivalent to the difference in baseball between pitching and throwing.  IMO, Cam is pushing the ball rather than placing it, because he's trying to compensate for the injury.  Again, in the past, he was able to complete the throws he's missing now with pure arm strength...  even with throwing it off his backfoot, he could zing it 50 yards downfield with the flick of his wrist.  Now, he doesn't have the arm strength to do it.  So, it's not the footwork.

I think touch on the ball is his biggest flaw, more so then footwork.  Think over the years of how many times he threw piss missiles at people and they bounced off or wasn't ready for it and caused either a INT or a incompletion.   Little softer touch on certain throws, could have made a world of difference in some games outcomes.

Pie for piss missles.

Lol where was Steve smith when cam was playing the best football of his career earlier in the season. Steve smith is a joke. Still upset how things ended here. A shame he’s the face of this franchise. Give Julius, Cam, and Luke over him every day of the week.

Smith wants this team to win. He picked us in every game this year including against the steelers where we were big underdogs. He still visits Panthers practice and gets along with all the guys. He's also the biggest DJ Moore supporter in the world. He may be critical of Cam when we struggle because he holds Cam to a higher standard than other QBs. I don't think there is any ill will towards Cam.

Although I do think the shoulder is effecting Cam more than some will admit. That's his personal take and his own opinion.

Mention Cam's name in a negative context = profit 10 times out of 10 for these talking heads. It's been the same song and dance for nearly a decade. Very few of these guys mention it or compliment him when he's winning with his team.

Wasn't he in the MVP talks at one point in the season? Remember when he was 14 of 14 passing in a game? He can't be that wildly inconsistent. Absolutely he has things he needs to work on as a passer. But there are multiple mitigating circumstances that have led to this point.

We really need to finally build a capable OL. The likes of turnstiles like Byron Bell, Nate Chandler, Mike Remmers, Matt Kalil, and others have been the theme throughout Newton's career.  You can remove Cam from the equation and replace him with any other QB, but the results aren't going to be any better when those are consistently the level of starters you are plugging in along your offensive line. Honestly you are likely to get your QB hurt, because IMO if that were any other QB the last 8 years the guy would be on IR more often than not.

100/100
