Cam haters, what could we realistically get in a trade for Cam?

We aren't trading Cam.

I was reading a lot of twitter the other day talking about an extension this offseason, and I just cannot get on board with that.

He is under contract for 2 more seasons.  Then you have the franchise tag if needed.

He comes back healthy and rolling next season, and makes it all the way through, sure, break out the signing pen.  Until then, let's let the contract play out.

You don't know that his shoulder is destroyed. He obviously isn't properly healed. He's nearing 30 in a game where QB's play into their mid 30's quite easily. He has the best physique at his position in the NFL. He's gonna be alright.

Delhomme could not throw at all at the end. He got exposed because he couldn't pull off his miracle throws anymore due to the elbow. And years of having Smith made him a lesser QB.

I’m not a rocket scientist but when 29 year old QB cannot throw 45 yards down the field 2 years after surgery... it’s a problem.  Cam have plenty of zip on 5-10 yard passes but I do not see any zip beyond that.  29 is a prime year for most players.

Or an NFL GM.

"Damaged" players have definitely been traded before. You just have to find a trade partner who's either not that bright or a little too trusting.

Most people who buy a used car don't take the car to their own on-staff personal mechanic to do a top-to-bottom examination of said used car before purchasing.

NFL teams?  Yeah... they do that.

I would never trade him because he is my favorite player in the NFL and the reason I root for the Panthers.

Neither of which are even close to being valid reasons to keep or trade anyone, not just Cam Newton.

What if Matt Kalil was your favorite player and the reason you root for the Panthers?

I'm not in favor of trading Newton, but there are two things I think we have to admit.

1) With a new owner, likely a new coach and possibly a new GM next season, his being traded is an actual possibility.

2) Even if he isn't traded next season, Tepper may not be willing to break the bank for his next contract.

There is the real possibility that next season's Panthers will be run by a group of leaders who have no ties to Newton's drafting or his previous career here. The notion that they may want "their own guy" is not out of the question.

Me? I wouldn't trade him. If I did, I'd be looking at something like the Herschel Walker trade as a template.

The more likely scenario for parting ways with Newton though comes when his contract is up. Tepper's Steeler background makes it less likely he'll spend crazy money on any position, quarterback included. if Newton and his agent are looking for a record contract, Tepper might not be willing to oblige.

Sorry folks, but much as it sucks to admit, whether we want it or not, yeah it could happen.

I don't know that I agree with the two areas in bold. The Steeler's model doesn't break the bank for most players, but they have been willing to do so for their franchise QB. I'm sure Tepper realizes it is smart to spend money on the franchise player. As much as we all like Luke, Cam IS that player, not Luke, not CMC, not Short or any other player on the Panthers.

One big thing needs to happen before the end of Cam's current contract, which may not good for the Panthers.

They have to find out if Cam can get healthy.

If he cannot get healthy, the Panthers are more likely let him walk at the end of his contract, as other teams are not going to offer much for a QB with a bad wing.

If he does get healthy, then you have to ask how long he will be effective. How long can Cam continue to run the ball as well as pass? His ability to run sets him apart from any other QB. It's a major part of who he is and, without it, he starts to look more like RGIII. I would be very hesitant to invest a lot of money into a QB with increasing health issues and a likely diminishing impact in the run game.

This is a question for the people who have suggested we think about trading him. I would never trade him because he is my favorite player in the NFL and the reason I root for the Panthers. But lets say if we shock the league and put him on the trade block what would he fetch and what teams would be interested?

I could easily see the Giants/Jaguars/Bengals being at the top of this list as those are teams who have a playoff roster and could use a franchise QB like Cam Newton. I think those 3 teams would easily give up 2 1st round picks and possibly more for a 29 year old QB.

Cam bashers what you think?

You do what you need to do to win a ring. If u think Cam can get us a ring you keep him. If u don’t think he can then get as much as you can for him and that means another qb with the talent to get us a ring. That’s not easy to find. Guys like Eli Manning and Nick Foles got rings. Sometimes you just need a game manager who won’t turn it over or get sacked provided you have a good supporting cast.
