Is it Eric Washington's fault that we haven't devloped any defensive line talent?

How much blame falls on Washington? He has been the D line coach since 2011 and we have devolved jack poo after spending quite a few high picks on the D line. Charles Johnson was already pretty damn good before Washington got here. Hardy maybe? Star and Short were both pretty much what they are today as rookies. If anything Short has just regressed season after season since 2015. (big money syndrome) Kony Ealy never developed into anything despite showing flashes. Delaire and Obada were one game wonders. Vernon Butler is the biggest bust since Armanti Edwards.

Isn't it part of a position coaches job to develop young talent? How has Ron sat around for 7 years and not realized that our young defense line talent has never improved?

Obada has more than 1 game flash.

His first game he was a monster. Then had 3 straight games of at least 1 QB hit which means pressure after his big first game and then the last game he almost had multiple sacks with an almost another INT with the PD.  After his 4 straight games with a QB, he went through 2 games of nothing on stats so RR sat him and he improved a lot, see Buc game.

Also Efe was amazing in his dropback coverage in the Buc game unlike the Giants game.

He is bigger, faster and stronger than Ryan Delaire. Christ sakes some on this forum make dumb simplified comparisons.

Any resource that rates captain or Poe as high performers is not credible in any way

Evidently you did not watch Poe do really good against the Bucs. PFF is no where perfect but the grades are pretty accurate this time. Poe was blowing up Bucs Oline

It isn't a dumb simplified comparison.  Both guys had a crazy good game that got everyone crazy hype and thinking we may finally having a future starting DE on our hands. They both game back down to earth after their great performances. Yes Obada may have had a good game against the Bucs but the guy was inactive the two weeks prior against the Seahawks and Lions and it wasn't for injury reasons.

So to go back to the main question, Do you think Eric Washington is doing a good job with developing Obada?

Not his fault. Someone else is DL coach. Was DL coach.

Eric Washington has been the "Defensive Line coach" for the Panthers since 2011. Only this season was Brady Hoke made Defensive Line coach when Washington was promoted to Defensive Coordinator.

I don't understand why you are informing me of this. Maybe it is,  I said it was not his fault the DL sucks this season (knowing Hoke was the new coach there), but you wanted a different answer.

I think every DL Gettleman drafted outside of Star and Short were straight trash. Kony Ealy is out of the league. Daeshon Hall and Vernon Butler are probably about to be. That's recent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounders. We don't suck at DL because Gettleman didn't invest in the DL, we suck at DL because Gettleman invested poorly in the DL.  We are utterly devoid of young DL talent despite the fact that he spent two 1st round picks, two 2nd round picks, and a 3rd round pick on the DL.

Well, let's look at that shall we?

Consider first his history.  Efe Obada never played a down of football before 2014 . . . when he was 22 years old.  Zero downs.  Frankly, the fact that he's now playing in the NFL is nothing short of miraculous.  16,000 college players are draft eligible every year, having played 2-4 years of football with all the coaching that goes along with it, and the vast majority of those played high school and peewee league.

He bounced around a couple practice squads before the Panthers picked him up via the IPP, but the vast majority of his development has been at the hands of the Panthers.  Whether that was Washington or someone else, I don't know.  It does say to me that someone on this staff has done a good job of developing him, and certainly in 2017 it was Washington.

So, yes, as a DL coach, Washington knows his business. Frankly, it's a shame that we're going to lose him in that capacity when the staff turns over.  As a DC, he was in completely over his head.

I think that he did well with the 2013 class (Star Lotulelei, Kawann Short, and Wes Horton (UDFA)). Mario Addison has developed well and has been with us since Washington was the DL coach.

He didn't really get anybody outside of the occasional flash in the pan (Ryan Delaire) or vet (Kyle Love) after Kony Ealy tho until Vernon Butler was drafted. Prior to that he was trying to get something out of Frank Alexander.

Bryan Cox Jr I can see being the new Wes Horton in regards to our UDFA rotational guy. We still haven't seen what Marquis Haynes can do outside of training camp, and Efe Obada might or might not be more than what he is.

All things considered, considering that we got the SB performance out of Ealy and two blocked kicks out of Butler (whom I will defend no more, he had a huge opportunity in the game that Poe did not start and did nothing with it), and he kept guys like CJ & Jared Allen motivated, I'm more than ok with him as the DL coach. I'm hoping that he's able to bring some new perspective from the time as a DC to be an even better positions coach until he's ready to one day assume a coordinator role again (just not here pls kthx)

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
