"Everything is fine" mentality doomed this team and Rivera

Early in the season when hope still abound, Ron Rivera and the players exuded an "Everything is fine" mentality, after close wins and even after losses. This mentality was the downfall of the season. Because of some lucky early season wins, the coaching staff and players were lulled into a false sense of security. Now after a collapse that most saw coming, heads deservedly need to roll. Let's see when the warning signs first arose, and how badly the coaching staff ignored them.

  • Against the Falcons in Week 2, the defense was shredded to pieces. It was the first time since 2016 the Panthers had given up a 100 yard rusher. Everyone chalked it up to a bad day, adjustments that need to be made, and "everything is fine".
  • Against the Giants in Week 5, the Panthers dominate most of the game, but in typical Rivera fashion, allow the Giants to come back and take the lead at the end. Some questionable offensive playcalling and a miracle 63 yard field goal later, the Panthers squeak out a game they had no business winning. This was a genuine collapse that got put off for a few weeks. Because they won the game, no real changes are considered. This was when I really started to get worried about this team. Coming out of a bye and almost losing to a pretty bad Giants team was a big red flag.
  • Panthers move on to the Redskins in Week 6, again get shredded on the ground, make crucial mistakes, but "everything is fine" because they almost came back and won the game.
  • Moving on to the Eagles game in Week 7, the Panthers played like garbage for most the game, but roared back behind some magic play-calling at the end to win. The Panthers did NOT deserve to win this game, but a W is a W. Again, no adjustments or changes are made because they won the game. There were people calling for Rivera to be fired at halftime.

The Panthers win against the Ravens and Bucs in convincing fashion which gave some hope the team is trending in the right direction. Then came the Steelers debacle.

  • Ron Rivera infamously states "Sh!t happens" after one of the worst blowouts in franchise history. A crucial turning point that will go down as a pivotal moment in team history. It was at this moment that Rivera lost the respect of the team and the fanbase. After one of the worst losses the team has ever endured, all you can say is "Sh!t happens?". Take ZERO responsibility for the blowout, then inexplicably give the team the weekend off to "get away from football" as if everything is fine?

We expected the Panthers to bounce back from the Steelers game by dominating an inferior and short handed Lions team. But the team again comes out sluggish and lazy, as if they expect to win just by showing up.

After the Lions loss, Rivera and the team just looked defeated. They had given up. The Steelers loss had broken them, but the signs were all there before. Because the warning signs were never taken seriously, and the team kept this "everything is fine" mentality until it was too late, I am very happy that the coaching staff is getting blown up. The team exuded a pompous and frankly lazy attitude all season, and they're all paying for it with their jobs.

Good riddance. Brighter days are hopefully ahead.

The “everything is fine” mentality came from JR. This team had to basically crumble before JR would approve any firings. In JR Ron knew he could falter and still keep his job.

The only reason you’re seeing people get fired(scapegoats)is because Tepper said he’s going to make changes.

Yep. Even Cam who used to hate losing with a passion seemed complacent.

Know what saddened me last week?

I forget what site it was on (probably ESPN and that douche-canoe David Newton) but Cam admitted that he has developed into a "better loser".

Ron's beat-down and subjugation of Super-Competitive, Joyful, and Happy Cam is now complete.

I can see Rivera after the Eagles and Giants game telling the team to " just keep doing what you're doing" instead of telling them they need to improve.

I'm tired of watching our QB stand up there every week and take responsibility for his mistakes only to watch our HC stand up there and deflect all blame like Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix.

For all who said Ron Rivera was a good coach maybe at some point he was and I'm being generous there, he sure isn't now.  Making commercials as inflate his ego. He no longer feels HE has to earn his pay and has rubbed off on the team. He should have been gone before and after the SB.

Agree. And even going into yesterday’s game, he was saying all the pressure was off the team now and they are relaxed after losing 3 straight.

He said that?? The "pressure is off" because they've lost three straight? Lol!

You know then the pressure is really off, Ron? When you get fired and your only decision is what you want for breakfast!
