Meachem: OK football gurus, thinking waaaay ahead of ourselves

top dawg

You guys who know a little more about the economics of football, and who actually think of yourself as being more in touch with the FO's philosophy...why not try to get Robert Meachem in the future? I was daydreaming about getting him before the trade deadline, but I knew that he wasn't on the radar, but maybe we should put him on the radar. The guy is a big target, who is really unnecessary to the overall success of the Saints, and is arguably the most naturally talented WR on the Saints roster (yes, even above Colston). And he returns kicks to boot. Although the Saints appear to be in a good position for years to come, will Meachem be really happy playing third or fourth fiddle. He was a first round guy.

According to what I was balt to find in a quick Google search, his 11.2 million dollar contract runs through 2012 (as does Devery Henderson's 12 million dollar deal earlier this year). Brees already is looking to Lance Moore more after only his first game back, and of course Colston ain't going anywhere. Why not try ultimately make a run for Meachem for next year? Just askin' what you think.

If a receiver can't shine in Payton's offense with Brees throwing him the ball, then I'm not sure I would be that interested.

The Saints have arguably the best pool of talent at WR in NFL history. They really don't need any one receiver to shine, but quite naturally QBs have their favorites. Sometimes it's not so much about shining but knowing your role, and being professional. Just because Meachem hasn't flourished doesn't mean that he doesn't have the ability. Sometimes it's all about the situation.

Look at (the other) Steve Smith in New York. He had been a periphery WR for years, now he is near the top of the league. To me, Meachem strikes me as a talented guy who is being lost within the shadow of other talented guys.

You Fail. No they do not, they dont even have the best receivers in the NFL now. That would be the Cardinals. Also, Jerry Rice and Terrel Owens were on the same team at one time. They have 3 #1 receivers.

Yup, a talented QB can make a bunch of decent WR's look like elite talent. I'd also rate Moss and Welker way above anything the Saints have.

That's your opinion. Anyway. I said it's arguable.

This thread is about Meachem and his ability, and how he would fit with the Panthers as a player on the field, and on the business side of things. Let's stay on task.

Consider the other comments when rating Meacham's ability. If he had tons, he would look amazing. Instead, he's not even close to the best they have. That's the kind of receiver Tampa Bay goes for, not us... ;)

Meacham = Colbert Jr.

Hiring Peyton (who looks to know what he is doing), bringing in Brees, Shockey, Bell, Vilma, Sharper, etc. makes me think that their FO (of which Peton is now a part) makes good decisions, and is working towards something. They don't seem to be dumb.

If Meachem sucked so much, then why---even amidst his average lack of production---would their FO deem it a good business decision to extend his contract (as well as Henderson's I might add)?

Furthermore, some of you would have been saying the exact same thing about (the other) Steve Smith, a couple of years ago.

BTW, no one in their right mind would extend Colbert anything but the door.

he's tied in fifth in receptions for the Saints, and is basically their 7th option.

not a single team goes into the game planning to stop Robert Meachem.

He sucked at Tennessee and he sucks now.

    • See, there's this whole thing about get your "Franchise" QB and you're golden. Except, well, it's crap. Look at the Jets, year after year, trying to draft that dude, never hitting. Then they go out and wrangle Aaron Rogers. And they're still crap. Why?  Because they haven't built a team. Their o-line is suspect, their defense is leaky.  A QB isn't the answer, until you've got the rest of your units up to at least middle of the pack quality.  Think about how long it took us to get right after drafting Cam. Phenomenal talent, impactful player, still took four years of team building before he took off. And on the other side, if you build a strong pair of O and D lines, then work hard at developing your skill players, someone like Jared Goff or Sam Darnold can come in and have success. Brock Purdy can get you to the Super Bowl. Trying to find your "franchise" QB at the top of the draft isn't a luxury pick, it's most often a wasteful pick. Get you the best d-lineman, tackle or linebacker in the draft.
    • I like Landon a lot, I believe he is going to be a beast at the next level and can, more than likely, get him in later rounds.
