Steve Smith: Panthers should move on from Devin Funchess

"Look: Everybody knows who I like: I love D.J.," said Smith. "And when you look at this offense, I kind of believe they're a better offense without Devin Funchess because you get some of those younger guys who get separation."

Smith then cited tell-tale statistics from Pro Football Focus concerning what the Panthers have been getting from Moore versus what they have been from Funchess. According to PFF, Smith states, D.J. Moore is getting 4.2 yards of separation on his catches, compared to just 2.2 for Funchess.

agreed

i used to be a big supporter of Funchess

fact is he is just wasted size who just drops balls. If he was a posession WR, I could see it...  but he plays small with no YAC with drop issues. he doesnt go up snd get it.

most of all, him and smith take DJ and Samuel off the feild.

our young explosive yac guys need to be on the feild 100% of the time

also, if i were tepper, id fire rivera and get the best offensive coach in here asap

we have a dual threat MVP QB in his prime and a ton of young weapons

it wouldnt take long for a coach to win with our roster  in fact our offense is pretty damn good with so much potential with moore n samuel

complete waste with rivera and the time eating ball control philosophy

They were literally ALL TRASH except Ted ginn, and he managed to screw that up as well.... My biggest gripe with Gettleman was always his damn Ego. It got in the way at the worst times.

Pretty sure he's been positive towards Samuel who is a DG guy.

The best he showed was last year after the KB trade until he got hurt. And to his credit he tried to play through it. But the DJ Moore pick essentially ended any realistic chances of signing a second contract with CAR. No matter his level of play, we weren’t going to pay him in this WR market. And now that his play has regressed, you don’t play him much either.

  He’s Brandon Lafell.

I don't think that Funchess is a BAD receiver. He's not. I think Funch needs to be coached to be and perform at the level of a big body, physical receiver who will be HIGHLY effective in run blocking and snagging jump balls and in/out routes where he uses his body to fend off defenders. That is his game. You send him over the middle and expect him to go up, snag that ball, and get down safe. He is not and never will be a YAC guy and that is OK but we're just using him in the role of "receiver" and not "big body". He's essentially a slightly faster TE and needs to be used like Olsen, Gronk, etc. We aren't going to do that, but he will go elsewhere and if he is used correctly, he will shine.

Why do I think he will shine if coached up and assigned that role, especially considering the drops he has? Well, I think the drops are just internal pressure and stress. When KB went down in the super bowl run and he had to step up, he was just doing what was needed. That's all. Then when KB left, he got forced into being THE guy at receiver by virtue of being the most senior and polished at that position at the NFL level. He tried so hard to not screw up that he did. He has shown this season when used as he is intended to be, he is still effective. But when he has space and needs to just make the catch and make a play, he becomes drop happy. This then effects the rest of his game and he stops being effective.

ALL this being said, we don't need him because DJ, Samuel, and Byrd are the future and they need to be on the field. We don't need the tall guys, because the NFL is no longer about the 6'2"+ receivers that can make circus catches. Now you just need separation and ball skills.
