At minimal we need to get a pass rusher in FA and one in the first round

CMC is great but the Derek Barnett at 8/Kamara in Round 2 combo wasn’t good enough for this franchise or fans here.  Barnett broke Reggie White’s sack record and wasn’t good enough, so not sure who's going to be available in the 20’s that is.

Winner.

Gotta have the push in the middle.  Otherwise the qb can climb the pocket and mitigate pressure from the outside.  And if they can do that when you blitz, the d is toast.

Yes i remember Big Ben just standing in the pocket. Like what no pressure. I mean he could have ran and got probably 15yds and that'  saying alot he has no speed. No one was near him. I thonk thats when Mike Adams was left covering AB. Their have been plenty of moments like this. When the opposing QB is looks lost bc there is no pressure its very terrible we are old and no youth, no competition for the vets. Just awful

Here's the DL the Panthers drafted for the last 5 drafts. No capital spent in 2015 coupled with what look like poor selections on Butler and especially Hall, plus the flame out of Ealy. With no young production from players on rookie deals, the Panthers have had to rely on older (and generally more expensive) players.

  • 2018 : 4th rounder on Haynes, a OLB to DE conversion and a 7th round pick on a DT.
  • 2017: 3rd rounder on Hall
  • 2016: 1st rounder on Butler (Cowboy's starting DT Collins was a 3rd rounder, their other starter Woods was a UDFA)
  • 2015: No DL selected.
  • 2014: 2nd rounder on Ealy (Cowboy's starting DE Lawerence was pick 34)

The oldest DL Dallas started last night was Crawford (29), 3rd rounder in 2012.

I think Haynes was a 5th round pick. Other than that, I'm pretty sure Gettleman traded the Josh Norman third round compensation pick to move up for Hall in 2017, so two thirds wasted there.

Most of our pressure comes from blitzes which puts pressure on our questionable secondary (except Jackson).

Pretty sure Peppers and maybe Addison or Horton had double digit sacks last year so what has changed that has made our front 4 suck?

Age slowing down.

Who will be available in FA? If we dumped Kalil and Short and designate as post June 1, I think our 2019 cap number is around $50 million with the carry over. Had we gone with Butker that number would be $60 million.

Not an exhaustive list but some of the names I see are Demarcus Lawrence, Frank Clark, Ezekiel Ansah, Brandon Graham, Trey Flowers, Carlos Dunlap, Cameron Wake, Muhammad Wilkerson, Dante Fowler Jr. and Dion Jordan.

Rivera has failed to develop ONE single defensive end prospect since he has been our coach.  We have ZERO young guys that are difference makers.  We dont go after them in free agency, and we cant develop them in-house.  Thats what gets you to where we are today.

I wonder if Hurney is willing to break the bank for Lawrence?  That guy is a beast.  Any word on his status with the Cowboys?  Are they looking to franchise or resign him?

He's playing on the tag this year, so they would have to tag him again if they don't work out a long term deal. On the subject of Lawerence, one of my favorite moments from the NO/DAL game was late in the 1st half. Lawrence was "miced up" and you could hear him imploring his defensive teammates to not be satisfied with what they had done and how they still had to keep working.

I see lots of folks blaming Washington (which he def deserves blame), but I don't see as many blaming the DL Coach - Brady Hoke. It's ridiculous to think Washington, being our former DL coach, and Hoke, a supposed defensive guy could be this awful.

As for age - that is a huge issue as the OP put out there.

I think we go full overhaul this draft/FA where the lists are very impressive.

FA:  Flowers, Clark

1st Round DEs: Bosa, Ferrell, Allen (out of our range) .....  Sweat, Polite, Burns, Omenihu

I hope we double dip and grab Flowers & Sweat .... maybe Omenihu instead of Sweat depending on how the OU game / Bowl Game / Senior Bowl / Combine goes.

We need AT LEAST 2 young bodies who can make an impact and also be developed for the future.  If they decide to go DE round 1 and 2 I will not be upset.  The D needs an overhaul via Free Agency and the draft this year.  What was once our biggest strength has become the reason we're losing ball games.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but prior to the season there was some word from people out of Falcon Land that Dontari Poe had back problems, potentially bad ones.

One Atlanta radio guy was on WFNZ basically laughing at the Panthers for signing him. The local guys were arguing back what many of the fans thought at the time, that we got a guy better than Star Lotulelei at half the price.

Sad to say, but right now, it looks like Atlanta radio guy is the one getting the last word :fear:

Agree wholeheartedly.

IMO, our O is set... the only thing we need in the first 3 rounds of the draft on offense is a center ( we re-sign Wiliams at RT & put Moton at LT). I hope we spend any and all picks on DE, FS, OLB, DT, CB. I believe with a new DC, DL coach and signing FA's like Eric Reid, Trey Flowers or Frank Clark we should be a SB contender next year. I also think we underestimated how different our secondary would look with a healthy Ross Cockrell.

We add someone like Sweat/Polite/Omenihu in R1, Taylor Rapp in R2, I'd be head over heels for our potential in 2019.

    • I don't get the Hunter hate. Just imagine his ceiling if he stopped trying to be this 2way freak and focused on one side of the ball
    • 100%.  You have to play the cards that are dealt.  Not the cards you wish were dealt.
    • I'd say its definitely going to be addressed this off-season.  We went into the last draft with a roster of RBs including:  Chubba, Blackshear, and Miles Sanders. We picked Jonathan Brooks in the second and still signed Rashaad Penny afterwards.  Fast forward....One turned into a top 10 back, 1 is injured/out for most if not all the '25 season, 1 retired, 1 will either take a huge paycut or be cut, and the last is a restricted free agent. We brought in Mike Boone as well. Add him to the free agent list also.  We need a physical option.    Which qualifies:  Ashton Jeanty(Boise St): Overall ranked Top 10. Almost 2k yards after contact, 28 tds. Would take our first rounder. My money would be on an NFC East team selecting him. (97.2 PFF run grade) - 121 forced missed tackles.  Omarion Hampton(UNC): Ranked everywhere from 20 - 59 overall. Consensus #2 back after Jeanty. He'll be a second rounder. 1,222 Yards after contact w/ 15 tds.  (90.5 PFF run grade) - 72 forced missed Tackles Kaleb Johnson(Iowa): Ranked from 38 - 69 depending on which media outlet you prefer but generally #3. 2nd/3rd possibly. 1,060 Yards after contact w/ 21 tds.(86.7 PFF run grade)- 66 forced missed tackles Cam Skattebo: Ranked from the 50's - 104. Every mock I do he ends up BPA at some point. 969 Yards after contact w/ 17 tds(92 PFF Run Grade). Probably the best receiving back of the group. 81 forced missed tackles.  If the '24 and '25 draft classes were combined, IMO the rankings would be, in order: Jeanty, Hampton, Brooks, Johnson, Skattebo. I wouldn't take one high but I'd take one for Chubba and Brooks insurance.
