"The ball can reach the end zone via the air"

Good and interesting article from "another" Panther's site.

The Carolina Panthers made seven trips into the red zone on Sunday. They scored three touchdowns and came away with 27 points on those seven trips, four points shy of what they needed for a win. The idea in the red zone was to run headlong into a wall several times in a row and hoping it would break despite no evidence to suggest that the wall had any chance of falling.

The Panthers first drive was an offensive masterpiece. It took just six plays for Cam Newton and the bunch to march into scoring position. Newton completed all three of his passes on the drive and took his first two runs for a total of 22 yards. A couple of Christian McCaffrey carries put the ball inside the ten yard line, and that’s when the Panthers decided to exert their will and run the ball straight into the teeth of the Seattle defense. It didn’t work.

The Panthers second drive was equally as effortless and efficient as the first. Two chunk plays through the air put the Panthers 12 yards away from the goal line. That meant it was time for more will exerting. The Panthers ran the ball three straight times, gained five yards, and kicked a field goal.

The Seahawks previous four opponents completed 66% of their passes for 8.8 yards per attempt against them. They ceded eight passing touchdowns and only intercepted one pass during that stretch. To start this game, Newton completed his first five pass attempts for 74 yards. For the game, he completed 83% of his passes and averaged 8.5 yards per pass attempt. The passing game was clicking, but when it came time to score, the Panthers took the ball out of their best player’s hands and put it into McCaffrey’s in the worst way possible.

Prior to Sunday, Christian McCaffrey had been handed the ball inside the opponent’s ten yard line 16 times. He’s gained 1.94 yards per carry on those totes and only converted three of them into touchdowns. McCaffrey is great at a lot of things. Running into crowded boxes around the goal line is not one of those things. Meanwhile Cam Newton had attempted 20 passes inside the opponent’s 10 yard line. He completed 13 of them for 8 touchdowns. Back it up to the opponent’s 20, and Newton had completed 27 of 38 passes for 15 touchdowns and no interceptions. Cam Newton is very good at throwing the ball into the end zone.

Despite those numbers, it took nine plays in the red zone before Norv Turner finally let his quarterback throw a pass. That pass was to a wide open Curtis Samuel for a touchdown. In total, the Panthers ran 22 plays inside the Seahawks 20 yard line, yet only tried to throw the ball across the goal line four times. Two of those were touchdowns.

I have always theorized that Ron Rivera doesn't and has never trusted Cam Newton, even though Cam Newton is the primary reason he is a "respected" head coach, pulling his dumbass fat out of the fire year after year again and again.

Yet here we are in the 2018 and he still doesn't.

I don’t think it’s that he doesn’t trust Cam.

I believe Rivera doesn’t want Cam and the offense to get all the credit.

As a defensive minded coach he wants to be respected like Mike Dikta and Buddy Ryan and feels in order to achieve that he has to field teams that wins due to defense.

So as a result he purposely holds Cam and the offense back by making winning the TOP battle their primary objective over scoring a bunch of points.

This way his defense can hopefully make plays and stand out more than the offense.

If you look up the top 3 scoring teams, Goff, Brees and Mahomes lead the nfl in RZ pass attempts, meanwhile Cam is dead last in pass attempts even though you can make the case he’s a better redzone passer than all of them. This coaching staff is stuck in Mesozoic era and it’s infuriating, Cam and this offense should have numbers that rival all of them. Mccaffrey is a averaging  like 2 ypc in the RZ yet they keep handing him the ball like if he was Lagarrett Blount, it makes no sense, It’s to the point where they are trying to prove a point instead of playing smart

You know who would be a great goal line/Red zone RB?  CJ Anderson....

Or Alex Armah.

No one argues that CMC is incapable of running between the tackles.  He is.  He does it differently, by looking for creases and cutting through them explosively.  However, he is NOT capable of pushing the pile, his style is different.  In goal to go situations, the box is stacked and there aren't typically very many creases to exploit by a quick, explosive back like CMC.  You need someone to push the pile a couple yards.

Yeh 1.96 yards per carry inside the 10 but we cut CJ? We still have CAP and we don’t run him either?

this team and Cam were money inside the red zone long before CMac. No disrespect to a great player in the making but,... why did old as Norv fix something that wasn’t broken? Or was it Hurney that cut CJ?

fire the staff,.. fire the staff,... fire the staff,..

Red zone territory should be Cam Newton territory: empty backfield, play-action pass, or designed QB run. Cam is the greatest QB threat (run + pass) in the history of the NFL. CMC can be utilized more effectively in the passing game when we are in the red zone.
