FYI... Ron Rivera did not play for the field goal on final drive

Reports state that Butker was crap in training camp. The staff didn't want a Tampa situation in a do or die season. Is that so hard to understand? If I knew that Butker would turn it around I would have cut Gano.

Rivera could have used preseason to see how he performed. He chose not to.

That's their job. To gather information and make the right roster decisions.

They're not doing it very well.

We had a more accurate, younger, cheaper NFL kicker on the roster, that we had just drafted and signed to a 4 year deal, and we went with the less accurate, older, much more expensive option.  That's bad roster management, something that Hurney has excelled at for over 10 years with the Panthers.

I will step in in Hurney's defense here.

That kinds of vet-over-unproven-rookie decision screams Ron Rivera.

This is one of the points I've been trying to emphasize recently.

Hurney and Rivera make these decisions together. Gettleman and Rivera did too. That's how it works.

Rivera/Gettleman built rosters with a significantly higher win percentage than Rivera/Hurney.

Down the road, we may come to realize that when Richardson fired Gettleman, he wound up unintentionally screwing over Rivera as well.

After re-watching the game I have concluded Ron Rivera did not settle for a field goal on the Carolina Panthers final drive.

Observe...

1st and 10

Read option. Cam Newton keeps the ball running it for three yards up the gut. Seahawks OLB makes a good play.

2nd and 7

Panthers in the shotgun. Greg Olsen comes open for what would have been a first down. Unfortunately, by that time Taylor Moton is beaten and Cam is under heavy pressure. Throws ball away. Would have been a first down if no pressure from Seattle.

3rd and 7

Panthers in shotgun again. Seahawks blitz. Crossing routes by Wright and Moore. Neither get much separation. Cam completes pass to Moore for 3 yards. Crossing routes were supposed to pick off Moore's defender so he could get more separation, but that didn't work out.

4th and 4 - Field Goal

The right call here, obviously. You have to try to go up by 3.

So, now that heads have cooled a bit, I admit I was wrong about that final drive. The Carolina Panthers did not play for the field goal. They did actually try for the first down.

You owe Riverboat Ron a personal apology. You need to go to Ron's office, get on your knees........... and apologize.

Finally some sanity in the Huddle!

Here's the problem with your argument.

Even if we accept it every single premise you put forth (which we wouldn't, but hey) you've failed to show any significant superiority in Gano's performance. To be quite frankly, you've shown no superiority at all, much less anything major.

Given the differences in age and contract between the two, Gano would need to be demonstrably better than Butker to be worth keeping over him.

He isn't.

The end result is we gave more money to.an older guy who may not have many years left at this rate when we could have had a guy who was just as good, just starting his career and significantly cheaper.

Doesn't matter how much spin you put on it. That's lousy roster management.

Absolutely agree,

But lousier roster mgt was the Norman fiasco that Nips created & we're still suffering from.

Yeah. We had to suffer through an 11-5 season last year and dismal additions like Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel.

Just awful...
