The 2018 Panthers: The most disappointing team in franchise history

People had expectations for this year well into mid-season.

Heck, if you look back at when Reid was signed, loads of people were (non-ironically) screaming Super Bowl.

And I’m not disagreeing.  But we’re still 6-5 with a chance to make the playoffs.  It’s not as disappointing as literally being the worst team in football

Depends on how you measure it.

If disappointing to you means "worst possible result" then 1-15 is your worst year.

The OP defines disappointing as "biggest disparity between expectations and results", so for him this season is worse because the preseason and early season expectations were in the stratosphere.

Well sure, but it’s kind of hard to make judgment then when the season isn’t even over yet.  We don’t know what the results are.

Pretty sure only the homerest of homers see us making any noise in the postseason at this point, assuming we even qualify to be part of it.

Ok Nostradamus lol

You are so freakin negative and if people don’t agree and lose complete hope, they are a homer?  You sound like such a fun and optimistic person.

Its so annoying and makes this site so much less fun.  Stop crying and have hope, what’s the harm in that?  Crying won’t make us better.

this team had the look of a sure playoff contender headed into midseason and then tanked hard which makes it more disappointing imo.

the 2006 team had the same record as this one at one point but that team disappointingly stumbled out of the gates early (dominated in every phase of the game by the vick-era falcons in the home opener, then the infamous gamble lateral in minnesota, then we finally got smitty back and were a hilarious slow motion delhomme scramble away from losing to a garbage bucs team), seemingly started to turn it around midseason, and then finally took a poo for good.  as noted it was all downhill after that goal line fade to keyshawn in philadelphia.

i will say that the 06 team looked like an absolute beast on paper though.  we entered that season with way more hype than this one.

The rampant racists have made this place less fun. Not users who have taken off the electric blue colored shades and calling this coaching staff out for what it is.

But that had nothing to do with coaches.  He said you got to be the “homerest of homers” to think we could win a playoff game.

Acting like we already know the results to the season is an elitist POV.  And it’s annoying how some of us who would like to remain positive and root for our favorite team are deemed homers because of it.  None of us know how the rest of the season will go just like how we didn’t know we’d be 6-5 after starting 6-2.

Quick Tip: Pretending that we're better than we are won't make us better either.

I prefer to be a realist, and the reality is that this team isn't good enough.

You aren't being a realist though.  If you want to say it's unlikely we'll make noise in the playoffs, sure.  But to dismiss people who have hope and say you have to be the homerest of homers to expect anything?  How in the hell can you not see how that is an elitist, overly-negative opinion?

And that is all you do.  Act like an elitist.  The 2011 Giants were worse off than we were and look what they accomplished.  I'm not saying we'll go down the same path as them (but who expected them to get past the high flying teams of Saints/Packers and the tough defensive team of the 49ers? (sounds familiar to the structure of the NFC right now, doesn't it?), but we have a franchise QB.  But according to you, as a realist, you would have given up on the Giants and deemed any fan who thinks otherwise to be an absolute homer.  At the end of the day, anything can happen if we get there and we could absolutely make it just like we could make it - I'm not the one making definitive statements or insulting someone for thinking otherwise.  What you do is you shoot down people who disagree and deem them to be the ultimate homer (ie. delusional).

And nobody is pretending that we are better than we are.  All I said is we don't know what the final result will be because we don't - you aren't Nostradamus.  You can predict what you think it will be, but we don't know, so saying ish like you have to be an ultimate homer to think otherwise is freakin' ridiculous.  You don't need to disrespect other fans because you're a negative person.

And no, being optimistic won't make us better.  But life is far more enjoyable when you actually have faith in something.  This is a 16 game season with 5 games left.  The NFL season is too short to be crying and moaning and giving up.  That is what the offseason is for.  But you continue to ruin the little bit of the NFL season left.

It's just so annoying.  I come onto this forum because I like talking Panthers football, but it is impossible to be an optimist or try to be happy about the team.  If you think the team can make the playoffs?  "Bro ur a homer!!!!"  Like come on.  But "I prefer to be a realist" is the type of thing an elitist would say.

Being upset about losing isn't what takes the fun out of things.

The losing itself is what does that.

You're free to be as optimistic as you want about this season. I'm not. But if you're genuinely confident something can happen, why does my opinion matter so much?
