Rivera is this team’s version of Jeff Fisher

Mediocre, stubborn, defensive-minded head coach with a plethora of talent but mediocre results living off of one good season.

I’ve been in Rivera’s corner prior to the previous two games. The past two weeks have shown me that this team is being hindered, not helped, by Rivera.

I’m almost willing to bet that this team goes 14-2 with a top 3 offense and top 10 defense next year with a more progressive-minded head coach.

I think RR is a much better coach than Fisher. But I totally understand your comparison. Look at what the Rams turned into once they got rid of him.

Sorry for the double post. Posted on wrong thread.

One thing missed in all of this is that we’ve asked Cam to be different this year. We’ve asked him to be more accurate, use his checkdowns aand allow the offense to produce without him taking off so much. What this also has created is a Cam less likely to go into “saving Rivera’s butt” mode, by taking off and putting everything in his own hands. BUT....

Rivera has forgotten that or never acknowledged it. You can’t have your every game X factor trust the offense WHEN YOU WON’T. In order to win a lot of these close games the way RR arranges them, we need Cam to be and do what other QBs can’t. Use his legs, pick up first downs, and run the clock. Cam has been very cooperative using the offense in a different way, but Rivera has failed him, not allowing the offense to maximize its ability, so games don’t come down to “Cam save me” mode.

Cam has changed, and Rivera has stayed the same. Problem.

if you really think about it, this team has had the same mentality since 2002.  think about how much football has changed since then.  much of that has to do with ownership naturally but it's relevant now because two richardson lifers are still running the team at the moment.  of course it's tired by now but the thing that might actually irk me the most is that, for all of our efforts to be this caveman football we're-gonna-punch-you-in-the mouth club, there are several teams who actually do that exact thing better than us.

i mean let's consider our current OC.  norv turner is still very much an old school coryell guy who is in many ways stuck in the past (feed the bell-cow back, likes having a true fullback, likes to go heavy close to the goal line) it's just that his execution and implementation of that offense isn't as outrageously terrible as shula's was so it seems like a breath of fresh air.

I have to agree with you on this.

Ironically, the offense we have now is (or would have been) a perfect complement to the strong defensive squads we had in the past. Our defense use to be the strength of our team, but not any more. I really think Ron would have a superbowl ring, more playoff appearances, and back to back winning seasons if he had hired a better OC and/or been willing to field a more aggressive offense in the past.
