What I hear is that our staff can't see Curtis or DJ as a WR1 . . . too small.  So I did a little research.  I present to you, five mystery contestants.  One is a retired HoF candidate.  Two are current unquestioned NFL WR1's.  Two are the guys our staff can't see as a WR1.

As you can see, they are all extremely comparable.  Some better in one drill or another, some slightly heavier.  All within a 10th of a second speed wise.

Who are these masked men?  Steve Smith, Curtis Samuel, Odell Beckham Jr, DJ Moore and Antonio Brown.

Memo to Panthers staff:  There is no size requirement to be a legit NFL WR1.  You have two guys on the roster right now who may well be legit WR1's.  Let's find out, shall we?

Wouldn't surprise me. Also wouldn't surprise me if Ron wasn't in Hurney's ear trying to get him to work out an extension for Funchess because he fits the mold of what a #1 WR is supposed to look like in Ron's mind. Hopefully Tepper would throw the brakes on that trash.

I think that's what's missing from our assessments Ron's stubborn we know that but he's been brain washed into thinking Cam needs tall WR's on the field to execute and he can't mentally break that stigma.

We need to move on from Funchess. We need to prepare to pay for DJ, Samuel, and CMC now because they SHOULD be the building blocks along with Cam around our offense for next decade. You can sign guys like Wright every 2-3 years as a stop gap.

You can sign guys like Funchess off of the Huddle. Everyone of us can go out there and fail to catch passes.

I don't see how you could coach Steve Smith, and have TWO physically gifted and comparable guys available in (Moore, & Samuel) and not want to maximize their contribution, Funchess is a B tier receiver performance wise, with perhaps an A frame. But in today's NFL size matters less than the ability to separate.

Funchess is better than KB in that regard, but Samule, and Moore both trump Funchess in that regard, most times those two make a catch where it's not a spot route and settling into a zone they're more open than Funchess.

I get ''learning curve'' and not over-whelming a rookie, but man in some cases you have to evolve past the '' this is how we've always done it'' mentality when you are staring ''potentially special talent'' right in the face!

These guys remind me of Emmanuel Sanders, and Antonio Brown early on in PIT, but IMO with higher end athleticism, and much more physicality after the catch // explosiveness.

You really don’t need to look any further than the guy we had on this team. #89 was almost always the smallest guy on the field but he played like he was the biggest... and Moore fits that same mold. Samuel is just freaky fast and can score from anywhere on the field.

But Ron says we can’t have them both on the field because then you have to figure out who’s getting the ball...

WTF???

Funchess needs to be sat

he is too lackadaisical with his routes, his hands, his attitude

more than once while at the stadium I saw newton talking to him about a route issue

Classic definition of a lollygagger.

Dont want to hear he is too young.  He is a third year pro affecting other men’s paychecks

This

although i haven’t heard the phrase lollygagger in quite some time lol

To be fair you can probably find plenty of guys over the last twenty years with similar measurables who never amounted to anything as NFL receivers. The issue isn't their physical attributes its our coaching staffs complete inability to both identify, and maximize, talent at the WR position.
