Silver Lining: The Saints almost drafted Patrick Mahomes

This conspiracy theory really doesn't make any sense. I get telling Brees out of respect, but why would you do it until you're on the clock? Anything can happen until you're on the clock, so why potentially ruffle any feathers until you actually know you have an opportunity to draft the kid? Once you're on the clock, give Drew a call. If he doesn't pick up, well you tried.

Brees was in the war room.

I was more of a fan of Deshaun Watson in that draft than I was of Mahomes

I've actually been surprised at how relatively well that Watson has played in the NFL. I thought there was a good chance he was one of those great college QBs who just wouldn't translate to the NFL. He had some college games where he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.

If true, that's just dumb. Especially if you're heavily considering drafting his successor.

Stupid is as stupid does.

”Brees and a couple of his college buddies, Jason Loerzel and Ben Smith, had just completed a wild boar hunting trip in south Louisiana and were back at the training facility, their chosen meeting spot.

After dining in the team cafeteria, they received an invitation from Payton to visit the war room just as the first round was getting under way. They weren't the only VIPs there that day. Payton had also invited PGA golfers Jordan Spieth and Ryan Palmer, who were in town for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and had played with Brees and Payton at the event's pro-am tournament the previous day.

And now the Saints were one pick from making their selection. And what's more, the top two prospects on the board were still available: cornerback Marshon Lattimore and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

With Buffalo on the clock at No. 10, and the Bills expected to select a defensive player, Payton suddenly realized he needed to have a conversation with his star quarterback and apprise him of where things stood.

This, after all, was a potentially unprecedented situation.”

So in the 10 minute window between picks, Payton tells Brees the team’s intentions when Buffalo is on the clock at #10 and Brees (in front of everyone in the war room) has enough time to call Tom Condon, his agent, who then has enough time to call multiple front offices across the League, who then have to call the Bills who hold the #10 selection and negotiate a trade?

Yeah, dude. You’re completely full of :poo:.

can't verify wether the story is valid or not, but why is it so hard to believe?

everyone is in contact with everyone on draft day, and 10 minutes a long damn time.

the only reason a person isn't prepared to answer a phone call within the first half ring on draft day is if they're a fan and have zilch to do with the nfl other than watch it all unfold.

Not saying I believe the story, but it's definitely not impossible that Brees could text his agent, "hey Saints may be taking Mahomes here what the hell" and then the agent calls/texts contacts throughout the league. And it's not like other teams aren't already going through trade scenarios. Let's say this story is true about Condon and Brees and the Saints' plans. It could've gotten to KC but still hadn't no impact at all. Nobody knows for sure, and it's kind of silly to discuss.

Lol it’s all true.

Yall got finessed by Walrus lookin ass Andy Reid just take the L and move on.

I’d say we ended up ok. Mahomes wasn’t going to start last season. Lattimore did, and he changed the defense from abysmal to decent. Saints with a decent defense is a contender. They draft Mahomes they might not even make the playoffs last season. Do they pass on Ramcyzk after already drafting an offensive player? Do they still get Kamara? Williams?

They had one of the greatest drafts of the last 2 decades and returned to elite form because of it.

So still no link verifying your claims? Not even a single tweet from a beat writer?

It’s been nearly two years, yet a Panthers fan is going to be the one to leak this information. Hmmm...

Have you seen the Saints record since that draft? Hardly a L.

Once again, post up some proof. Literally the first the world is hearing about all of this Saints news is a poster on a Panthers forum? Come on guy lol.
