Panthers roster versus former scout's checklist for building a roster

QB (1) - QB1. Cameron Jerrell Newton. I'd say the Panthers are set at QB for as long as Newton stays healthy.

Pass rushers (2) - Do the Panthers even have 1? By the numbers, Addision as 7.5 sacks and Peppers has 4. A couple of Addison's are clean up jobs. Are teams going into the week saying they have to contain Addision on the edge? I don't think so.

Offensive Playmaker (3) - CMC, Moore, Samuel. The only issue here is usage. Samuel needs more snaps and targets.

Defensive Playmaker (3) - Playmakers other than your two pass rushers so Peppers is already taken. Luke should really headline this list, but based just on 2018, can you say that? Donte Jackson sure seems like one. Thomas Davis still makes plays. I guess its Luke, Jackson and Thomas Davis.

Quality OL (3) - Ryan Kalil. Trai Turner should be here, but I'm not sure he's played up to that this year. Moton looks like quality, although even he's had a rough stretch or two. GVR has had moments. Clark is serviceable, I'm not sure I'd call him "Quality".

"foundation":

Newton, Addison, Peppers*, CMC, Moore, Samuel, Luke, Jackson, Davis*, Ryan Kalil*, Moton, Turner (I guess).

* denotes possible retirement at the end of the 2018 season.

Given the strength of the DL class this year, we almost have to use our 1st round pick on the best DE or DT available. Then we probably need to do it again in the 2nd or 3rd. This DL desperately needs an infusion of quality young talent. We probably need to add a decent FA DE as well. I'm not sure that any of our young DEs are truly NFL caliber. Float Butler out there on the trade market and see if we can get anything for him. He's a bust.

While I agree, with the NFL no touch rules on the QB a quality CB or SS in FA would be huge. It's not just that we can't rush but when we do get pressure our CB fail or don't catch ints.

The rule change has completely turned the league upside down and fuged over quite a few teams that should have been strong. The Jaguars and Vikings downfall didn't happen overnight for no reason, their strengths were having a strong physical defense and having that is a punishable crime in current NFL. We got hit by it a little, but our last few drafts also softened the blow since by some miracle we started drafting speed and that's what matters most at the moment.

If I'm the GM of 2019 Panthers I do a few things.

  • Change to 3-4 since it's better at defending passing
  • Keep acquiring young pass catchers and defensive backs
  • Get someone who can be disruptive on the DL

Decent list but he named 12/22 starting spots so it seems obvious that would be a good foundation.

If you factor in asset allocation (who I would spend high draft picks and cap space on) my list would be something like this:

Offense: QB, LT, RT, WR, WR

Defense:

DL that can rush the QB x2

CB1, CB2, and CB3

LB that can cover

Safety that can cover

Seems like guards, centers, TEs, RBs, run stopping DTs, box safeties, and LBs you can find lower in the draft or cheaper in FA.
