Not saying they should, but definitely don't buy the sentiment that the team can't bench Funchess because he's the only X receiver. What if he's injured? I guarantee you someone will be in that position the very next play. Guaran-damn-tee!

I hate to oversimplify things but football isn't rocket science. It's not like they have to decipher differential equations. Wide receivers simply need the reps so that they're on the same page as the QB. The play call in the huddle usually tells you exactly what to do. Learn the terminology and be able to adjust based on the coverage.
