Ron just staked his career (and potentially the season) on that playcall

It is really not about the same.  Not even close.

So you think kicking an XP, stopping them on the final minute, and stopping and scoring in OT is considerably easier than scoring from 2 yards out and stopping them on the next drive?

This was the correct play call based on the flow of the game. I don’t blame Rivera at all. Cam needs to make that throw

I said in the game thread that I was okay with going for two, but I think the absolute best choice would have been to have Harrison Butker kick the extra point.

Unfortunately, that wasn't an option.

Elephant in the room

We should never have been in that situation.  The team played with no emotion, no effort.  RR again does not have a team prepared to win a game that we should have won.  oh and he gave them 4 days off?  Really - ok a day off I could see - but 4? after the biggest blowout in franchise history?  These guys make Millions - stop treating them like kiddies... when has that worked in our past?

then why put yourself in that position if the two points are meaningless?

What’s the reaction though if he trots Gano out there and he misses ached having missed a fg an extra point and nearly another?  This place would still be in its irate state only now we’d be pissed that he didn’t go for two.

I think he saw an opportunity to steal a game we had no chance of winning.  I’d rather see him take chances than play conservative.

With that said, he’s lost the team. The effort isn’t there on defense.

One scenario requires only 2 things to happen for us to win.  One scenario requires, at MINIMUM, 4 things to happen (XP being made, stop, getting the ball first in OT, scoring a TD on first drive is the absolute best case scenario).  Even with the XP holding a "50% better chance than a 2point" (if we're also going to ignore that us getting the ball first in OT is literally just a 50/50 chance, but again confirmation bias), assuming I had that much faith in Gano today, I'm confused as to how people think the latter is a lot easier than the former.  But I guess I don't know "simple math".

i would completely agree with you if there was ten seconds left in the game. there wasn't. the lions had loads of time to go no-huddle and play for four downs and a long field goal in a dome with matt fuging prater.

imo the call is absolutely indefensible given the risk/reward analysis and i've yet to see anyone defend ron's analysis of the reward.

i mean that was gonna be the situation whether we kicked the XP or got the 2pt conversion. they were gonna have 3 timeouts and a kicker in a dome who can hit from 60+. might as well take the risk with the reward being if the Lions cant get into range or theres a bad snap/hold we win the game instead of going to OT.

Newton supposedly has a leg injury and that probably explains not running I would have gone with a run

funchess needs to be benched

gano, well you know what Ron, you decided to keep him over Buckner, so live with it

is anyone tired of the Ron Rivera show yet?

all that money tied up in that aging, underperforming defense and to make it worse, in the last run for those aging players he gives some one who had never coordinated, the Coordinator position

need points, go up the middle, passing and running

sick of it  sick of Ron   Coordinators come and go, Ron is still here

Feeling the same, people talking about the last throw but ignoring the hole damn game.

Team looks out of sink, not prepared, out coached.

Samuel scores a touchdown then takes him out the next series

Funchess drops passes then still have him in the game.

Dont have Funchess in the game for the last drive, scores, then put him in for the two point conversion.

Stupid coaching

because the difference between 20 points and 21 points is nominal compared to what happens if the lions kick a field goal, but the difference between 19 points and 20 points if you miss is winning and losing right away.

i don't know how else to explain it

My attempt at a paraphrase...

The Lions marching to a field goal beats us either way.  It's irrelevant to the decision.

Going for two means taking a big chance because if you don't get it, you've basically given away the game.

My own take? There are times to be conservative and times to be aggressive.  Neither is always the right call.  Nobody's perfect, but smart coaches make the right choice more often than not.

With Rivera, it's not that he's always conservative or always aggressive.  It's just that whichever of the two he chooses at a given moment has an unfortunate tendency to be the wrong choice.
