I we had a great team that year, but the injuries and our road through the playoffs just killed us, we had the toughest road to the super bowl that year, and pulled off 2 outstanding wins, just going cross country, and then players on the team getting sick. We just got worn out.

Nick Goings started and went out with a concussion if I recall.... 5th string RB in at that point I think?  In 23 years as a Panthers fan tonight was the angriest Ive been at a coach..... having watched every game of Shula/Henning, I think that is saying somthing.

They scored 52pts, look I get you're a fan but this team isn't going to the Superbowl if the Rams and Saints are in our way. Our defense isn't good enough and while we might be able to shoot it out it's not our style. We don't have Kansas City offense. I see the same team as last season, honestly.

Would you think I'm Crazy if I said there is nothing wrong with that?

I stated in early September that this wasnt a Super Bowl team, and not once have I changed my stance on that. but if we win 11-12 games and make the playoffs how can you not consider that a good season? there are many teams in the NFL that wish they had our problems right now.

I have stated many times before that you cannot base a seasons success on if we won the Super Bowl or not.  If so you will only ever be a disappointed fan. This team is a playoff team, now maybe after we get into the Playoffs we can make some noise and win a game or two? I would consider that to be a very successful season.

but until the Panthers make a youth movement, which I'm hoping will come next year, and they stop holding onto 35 year old players at key positions, then maybe we can go further than that and go to another super bowl.

Fair statement, and you very well might be right... but we still had a chance to beat the Saints last year on the road with a much worse cast of characters on defense.

And as for the Saints, they have certainly looked bad on defense some this year as well... as have the Rams

We will have to get hot on offense and play a hell of a lot better on defense to have a chance against the Saints or Rams in the playoffs, but we will still have a chance

I know you've been around here a lot time as well as I have... no one objectively could look at this team tonight and say they are a SB team right now...

But crazy things can and do happen in the playoffs... I thought the 2008 Arizona Cardinals looked like one of the worst teams going into the playoffs that year (they got absolutely destroyed in Week 17 and had won a weak division) and then they got hot and almost won it all

no bro, 2008 was way worse, this one may be stinging a little bit still right now, but 2008 was yikes. 2015 super bowl felt bad, but at the same time, I felt like we had a very good core to the team and would be back, just didnt realize the NFL would let opposing teams have an open season on Cam that year, and that gettleman was dumb enough to let Norman walk. still pissed about both those thing, and I dont think I will ever forgive them for that either.

For as good as 2008 was, I remember getting our asses whipped against both Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Like badly. Don’t recall the scores but do remember the doom and gloom. And we beat AZ that year and everyone felt great going into the playoffs against them.

The NFL is a fickle bitch and you never know.

I think that is something that is lost on a lot of newer fans, they see a game and now you have people on here acting like there is no way that we can make it to the playoffs or win a playoff game.

Did we not just beat the defending super bowl champs in their own house 3 weeks ago? or destroy the leagues top ranked Defense 2 weeks ago?

Panthers have some impressive quality wins this year, yeah we lost bad to a very good team on a super short week.  but poo happens.

People talk in absolutes on here too often, and if there is any one thing thats for certain about the NFL is that on any given sunday anything can happen.

And thats why we watch the games.

The difference is that we had a elite defense that could bounce back and a DC while not the best was better than Washington. Pitt wasn't a fluke they just figured out a way of keeping Cam from scoring. Our defense still gave up as many points as it did last week and the week before that. We just need a actual DC like we needed a actual OC for years.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
